Mountain music, museums, and mountain landscapes give Dickenson County a varied travel profile. The Ralph Stanley Museum focuses on music history, while rivers, lakes, and scenic overlooks offer different perspectives on the region. You can shape your trip around cultural interests, water activities, or a drive through the mountains.

Mountain Music and Regional History

The Ralph Stanley Museum combines modern technology with an immersive design. Through headphones, visitors hear Ralph Stanley himself tell the story of his life, as well as the history and key milestones of Mountain Music. The expanded exhibit areas also explore the origins of country music and modern bluegrass, as well as the life and music of Ralph Stanley’s brother, Carter.

The museum offers tours for adults, motorcoach groups, and student groups. Tours must be arranged in advance, so if a tour is part of your plans, schedule it before your visit.

Smaller collections with a different focus offer further insights into regional history. The Dr. Phipps Family Museum displays birth records from the former hospital, along with other Dr. Phipps family memorabilia. In Clinchco, Virginia, the Dickenson County Coal Miners Memorial lists 309 names dating back to the early 20th century.

Craftsmanship is also part of the region’s heritage: Hill Mandolins handcrafts high-quality mandolins and guitars in the mountains of Dickenson County. Visits with the artisan are by appointment. If you plan to visit, confirm availability before you arrive.

Mountain Views, Trails, and a Scenic Byway

Birch Knob Tower is in Dickenson County, Virginia, at 3,144 feet above sea level. From there, the view stretches across Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee; on a clear day, Ohio is also visible. The area around the tower also provides access to the Pine Mountain Trail.

Another way to experience the mountain landscape is the Cumberland Mountain Drive. This 19-mile drive follows State Route 611, a Virginia Scenic Byway, through the mountains of Dickenson County. It offers a clearly defined stretch of road for anyone who wants to explore the region by car.

Ridgeview and the Coal Canyon system are also defined by their trail mileage: Ridgeview includes 78 miles of trails in Haysi and connects to the Coal Canyon system, which offers another 127 miles. The Ridgeview trailhead is at Kiwanis Park in Haysi, 849 Kiwanis Park Road, where trailer parking is available.

Lakes and Rivers: Different Ways to Enjoy the Water

The John W. Flannagan Reservoir is a 1,143-acre reservoir in Dickenson County. Sport fish found there include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, hybrid striped bass, catfish, sunfish, rock bass, carp, and muskellunge. The Russell Fork River is designated as a Virginia Scenic River in Dickenson County.

At Laurel Lake, pedal boats, kayaks, and canoes are available for seasonal rental by the hour or half-hour. There is also a public boat launch on the Pound River for kayaking and canoeing, where you can launch and retrieve your boats. The Cranesnest Fishing Pier offers fishing opportunities.

Whitewater rafting on the Russell Fork River through Breaks Canyon, below the John Flannagan Dam, is possible on four weekends in October when water is released from the dam. Exact dates may vary by year, so check them before making plans. Depending on the river section, the difficulty ranges from Class III to V+.

Another river outing is tubing downstream from the town of Haysi on the Russell Fork River to Thunder River Campground. The trip takes about two hours. Rental availability may change, so if you’re relying on it, check before you travel.

Events and Planning

The Jettie Baker Center regularly hosts scheduled events and programs. Since individual event schedules may change, check the dates if you plan to time your stay around them.

The attractions appeal to different interests: the museum and memorial offer insights into music and regional history, while the scenic byway, overlook, and water activities showcase different aspects of the landscape. When planning your trip, it’s worth coordinating your chosen visits and seasonal activities in advance.
