Plymouth offers travelers distinct points of interest in cultural history, cheesemaking and nature. In Plymouth Notch, the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site preserves Calvin Coolidge’s birthplace and childhood home. Coolidge State Park offers a different focus, with several miles of hiking trails and its forest habitat. Depending on the themes you want to explore on a trip, you can weigh cultural and landscape interests separately.

Cultural History in Plymouth Notch

The President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site preserves Calvin Coolidge’s birthplace and childhood home. Its Museum & Education Center houses exhibits and archives about his private and public life. This adds a museum perspective on different aspects of Coolidge’s life to the historic site. The Historic Site also includes two museum shops, walking paths and a covered picnic area. You can combine the cultural focus with a walk or a picnic break on the grounds.

Cheesemaking at the Historic Site

The Plymouth Cheese Factory is also located at the Calvin Coolidge Historic Site in Plymouth Notch. A self-guided tour includes viewing windows into the cheese rooms, a sales area and an upstairs exhibit of antique cheesemaking equipment. The experience combines a look into the cheese rooms with an exhibit on the history of the craft. Two different themes therefore come together at the same site: Coolidge history and cheesemaking.

Nature at Coolidge State Park

Coolidge State Park is the main developed recreation area within the 21,500-acre Calvin Coolidge State Forest and has several miles of hiking trails. Its forest habitat supports wildlife such as barred owls, moose and black bears. The trails and wildlife offer different points of focus: the trails highlight recreational opportunities, while the species point to the forest as a habitat. For your trip planning, you can consider hiking and nature as two separate interests.

Land Conservation and Environmental Education

Farm & Wilderness Conservation protects more than 5,000 acres in Mount Holly and Plymouth, Vermont. The organization supports the sustainable use of natural and managed forests, farmland and waterways. It also promotes community engagement through outdoor and environmental education, and supports responsible, accessible recreation. This topic differs from the park’s hiking trails: alongside recreation, it also concerns land use, education and community engagement.

Different Geographic Locations

To understand how these places are situated, it helps to look at their respective locations: the Plymouth Cheese Factory is at the historic site in Plymouth Notch. Coolidge State Park is within Calvin Coolidge State Forest, while Farm & Wilderness Conservation protects land in Mount Holly and Plymouth. This means a shared cultural site and nature-related locations with different boundaries sit alongside one another.
