In Windsor County, the history of technology, rural history and hiking trails come together across varied landscapes. The Robbins & Lawrence Armory, home to the American Precision Museum, Billings Farm & Museum, and routes such as the Mount Ascutney Parkway each offer a distinct experience. Whether you focus on museums, local history, hiking or time by the water will shape the character of your trip.

Culture, Technology and Local History

Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park is in Windsor County and explores the history of conservation and changes in land management in the United States. Here, the landscape meets the history of how people have used the land.

The Robbins & Lawrence Armory, which houses the American Precision Museum, is a National Historic Landmark. Built in 1846, the brick building was originally constructed as an armory. The museum displays machine tools, metrology tools and other precision instruments. In the Learning Lab, visitors can tinker and invent for themselves. The technical collections and a hands-on activity are presented side by side.

Billings Farm & Museum is a working dairy farm and a living museum of Vermont’s rural history. Agriculture and museum exhibits jointly form its focus. This approach to regional history differs from the history of technology at the American Precision Museum.

Plymouth Notch is the birthplace and childhood home of Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States. The Calvin Coolidge exhibit also includes an exhibition on cheesemaking in Vermont, focused on the distinctive, crumbly Plymouth Cheese. Check for possible closures due to preservation work before visiting.

In Windsor, a self-guided walking tour covers more than 40 historic buildings. At Artisan’s Park and the shops on Main Street, visitors can watch one-of-a-kind items being made and meet artists. Historic architecture and encounters with craftspeople offer distinct cultural interests to choose from.

Hiking Trails, Lakeshores and Nature

The 3.7-mile Mount Ascutney Parkway leads to a parking area at an elevation of 2,800 feet. From there, a hike of just under 1 mile leads to the summit. The drive and the walk that follows are two parts of the trip; check road and trail conditions before setting out.

At Wilgus State Park, the Pinnacle Trail is a 1-mile loop that reaches an elevation of 628 feet. Its route differs from the hike of just under 1 mile from the Mount Ascutney parking area to the summit: this is a loop, while that trail leads to the summit. Conditions on the Pinnacle Trail may vary.

Camp Plymouth State Park is on the east shore of Echo Lake in Plymouth, Windsor County. The park has a sandy beach with a swimming area; seasonal use may vary. The Vista Trail is a 1-mile, moderately difficult out-and-back hike through a white pine forest. This connects the lake with a specifically described hiking route. Visitors can also pan for gold for personal enjoyment in Buffalo Brook. Check the applicable rules before taking part.

The Quechee Gorge Trail leads to the gorge and offers views along the way; trail conditions may vary. Gifford Woods State Park is near the Appalachian Trail and the Long Trail and is a popular stop for hikers. The Vermont Institute of Natural Science Nature Center offers exhibits and activities, including the Forest Canopy Walk. Views of the gorge, proximity to two long-distance trails and the Nature Center’s offerings provide different ways to experience nature and outdoor activities.
