Franklin County: Islands, Nature and Maple Traditions
Accommodation in Franklin County
Burton Island is a 253-acre park in the “Inland Sea” of Lake Champlain, off the southwest tip of St. Albans Point. The island is accessible only by boat. The state passenger ferry from Kill Kare State Park takes ten minutes; it operates seasonally, and reservations should be part of your planning. Check the ferry schedule in advance. Woods Island in Lake Champlain is also accessible only by boat. Burton Island covers about 102 hectares.
At Lake Carmi and in Missisquoi Refuge
Lake Carmi State Park has the largest campground within the Vermont State Parks; the campground operates seasonally. Within the park, in the Town of Franklin, is the 140-acre Lake Carmi Bog Natural Area. Lake Carmi therefore offers both camping and a distinct natural area.
For wildlife viewing, Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge offers five trails totaling 7.5 miles. Boardwalks along the trails provide elevated access through wildlife habitats. The length refers to all five trails combined; seasonal trail closures should also be taken into account. If you plan a walk there, check which trails are accessible during your visit.
Boat access also varies within the refuge: Louie's Landing offers year-round boat access, while the boat launch at Mac's Bend on the Missisquoi River is seasonal. If your plans depend on the launch, check its availability for your intended travel dates.
Maple Traditions and Cultural Heritage
The Saint Albans Museum preserves and shares the cultural heritage of St. Albans, Franklin County and northwestern Vermont. Its scope connects local and regional history. At Kill Kare State Park, the Rocky Point House now serves as a museum and event space; details about event use may vary.
The three-day Vermont Maple Festival is held annually in downtown St. Albans. The program includes maple syrup tastings, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, a parade and craft vendors. Dates and program items vary from year to year. St. Albans also has a weekly farmers market; its schedule may change.
Plan Your Travel Dates Accordingly
Activities follow different schedules: the Maple Festival is an annual three-day event, while the farmers market takes place weekly. For island visits, keep seasonal ferry service and reservations in mind; trails in the refuge may close seasonally. If a particular experience is central to your stay, check its dates or access conditions before making firm plans.
