Juab: Natural Attractions, Topaz, and Wide-Open Landscapes
Accommodation in Juab
Juab offers travelers a range of experiences: possible wildlife viewing at Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge, the geology of Topaz Mountain, and the wide-open landscapes of Little Sahara Recreation Area. There are also opportunities for hiking, camping, and driving a scenic route. Planning therefore depends on both the activity you have in mind and the access and service conditions at each destination.
Wildlife Viewing and Topaz Geology
Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge has a self-guided auto tour. Interpretive signs provide information about possible wildlife sightings, habitats, and conservation efforts. The refuge is 75 miles from the nearest town with services; approaching from the east involves about 80 miles of gravel road. These distances make the drive an important part of planning.
Topaz crystals occur in rhyolite at Topaz Mountain. The rock erupted from volcanic vents along faults about six to seven million years ago. Those looking for crystals can search the washes and slopes on the south side, as well as fissures in the rhyolite. The search offers a connection to a distinctive geological history.
Remote Topaz Mountain has neither water nor services. So bring food, plenty of water, tools, and emergency equipment. Land-use rules may apply to rock collecting.
Landscapes, Camping, and Activities
Little Sahara Recreation Area covers 63,000 acres of rolling dunes, sagebrush flats, and juniper-covered hills. The landscape is not just dunes; it also includes flats and vegetated hills. The terrain in Rockwell Wilderness Study Area is suitable for hiking, birdwatching, and photography. If you choose outings based on the activity, you can compare these options with a self-guided auto tour at Fish Springs Refuge.
Little Sahara Recreation Area has four campgrounds with a total of 255 improved sites, as well as drinking water, restrooms, and an RV dump station. The numbers of campgrounds and sites may change as facilities are improved. Dispersed camping is also possible outside the campgrounds.
