Chappell Hill: Landscape and Getting Around
Chappell Hill is in the southeastern part of Washington County; the county is located on US Highway 290, roughly halfway between Houston and Austin. The halfway description refers to the county, not Chappell Hill itself. The area is characterized by rolling hills and scenic landscapes, and is known for its blooming Bluebonnet fields. If you are looking for a hotel in Chappell Hill, historic sites, the landscape or an event date may shape the focus of your trip.
Historical Development
Mary Hargrove Haller founded Chappell Hill in 1847. In 1889, Polish immigrants founded St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Chappell Hill. Another landmark is Global One Bank, formerly Chappell Hill Bank: According to its own account, it began operations after receiving its charter in 1907 and has operated continuously at the same location in Washington County ever since. The dates 1847, 1889 and 1907 place the town’s founding, the church’s founding and the bank’s history in chronological context.
Historic Sites and Collections
Main Street is listed as a Historic District on the National Register. The Chappell Hill Historic District also includes the restored parsonage of Providence Baptist Church. The museum in the district features historical exhibits as well as the Swearingen folk art collection. Farmers State Bank and Reinstein Store has been listed as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 2009. For orientation, it is worth distinguishing between the designated district, the museum exhibits and collection, and the separately listed landmark.
Audio Walk and Tours
The Chappell Hill Soundwalk is a guided audio walk featuring historic sites and stories from the region. The museum and the Soundwalk focus on different things: the museum centers on historical exhibits and the Swearingen folk art collection, while the Soundwalk focuses on listening and walking. A downloadable Chappell Hill Walking Tour brochure is also available to visitors. Group tours of the historic sites are offered Wednesday through Saturday; check the dates in advance if you are planning a tour.
Festivals, Landscape and Wine
Chappell Hill hosts the Spring Bluebonnet Festival and the Fall Scarecrow Festival each year. The annual Independence Day Parade features the Chappell Hill children's kazoo marching band. The names of the two festivals refer to spring and fall; the parade is another recurring annual event. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.
Texas Star Winery is currently part of the Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail and offers wine tastings in a tasting room or beneath the trees. You can choose between the two listed tasting locations. Since visiting options may change, check the current options before your visit.
