Brenham: History, Culture and Recreation
Accommodation in Brenham
Brenham offers travelers a variety of things to explore: firefighting history, local culture and recreational activities. History enthusiasts can explore the past in different ways at Toubin Park, the Brenham Fire Museum and the Camptown Soundwalk Experience. For exercise, there are trails of varying lengths; theater, Maifest, swimming and an ice cream parlor round out the picture.
Firefighting History and Local Past
A large system of historic cisterns at Toubin Park is designated a State Archeological Landmark. The cisterns associated with the park were built in the late 19th century to store rainwater for public firefighting. They illustrate a specific part of the city’s history: using water as a resource for fire protection.
Samanthe at the Brenham Fire Museum offers another glimpse of firefighting history. The vehicle is a 1923 American LaFrance Type 38, one of only three of its kind still in existence. Comparing it with the cistern system highlights two different aspects of fire protection: historic water storage and a preserved fire engine.
The Camptown Soundwalk Experience takes you through one of the earliest Freedom Colonies in Washington County. Enslaved people gathered there before emancipation; at the end of the Civil War, they founded a thriving community. Seven stations line a walking trail. Signs with QR codes provide access to an audio tour featuring stories and sounds. The selection of picture books available to read on the StoryWalk may change.
The Brenham Heritage Museum is located in Downtown Brenham and is dedicated to local history. Its exhibits and collections focus on the history and culture of Washington County. The museum and soundwalk complement each other: the museum focuses on the region, while the Camptown Experience highlights a specific historic place and its community.
Theater, Tradition and Trails
Unity Theatre is a professional 125-seat theater in a restored warehouse in historic downtown Brenham. Its year-round program includes a variety of plays and musicals; individual schedules vary. Since 1884, Fireman's Park has hosted the annual Maifest, a German folk festival. The theater program and Maifest offer different cultural experiences, and you can take their specific dates into account when planning your trip.
There are trails for walking and other exercise, with clearly different lengths and uses. Brenham’s Hike and Bike Trail is 2.84 miles long and is a multi-use trail for walking and cycling. Check current trail conditions before including it in your plans. Hohlt Park has a trail approximately one mile long for walking and jogging.
At Fireman's Park, the StoryWalk uses approximately 20 signs along a 0.5-mile trail. Families can read children’s picture books while walking. At about half a mile, this trail is shorter than the approximately one-mile trail in Hohlt Park; the 2.84-mile Hike and Bike Trail is the longest of these three routes. The different lengths and uses can help you choose suitable trails when planning your trip, without assuming how long they will take to walk.
Swimming and Ice Cream
Blue Bell Aquatic Center has three pools: an indoor six-lane competition pool, a heated therapy pool and an outdoor recreational pool. Public hours and seasonal schedules may change; check current hours before your visit.
The Blue Bell Ice Cream Parlor in Brenham serves scoops of Blue Bell Ice Cream. Frozen snacks and bottled water are also available. Hours may change here, too, so it is a good idea to check in advance.
