The different themes offer a varied introduction to the destination.
Ranching History, Buildings, and Community Development
The McGill Brothers Building was built in 1941 as an office building for ranch operations and has been listed as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 1994. The Jim Wells County Courthouse is considered an important building in the county’s history. More than 2,000 people attended its cornerstone-laying ceremony on July 25, 1912.
First Presbyterian Church of Alice was founded as a mission church in 1898. A new brick building was constructed for it in 1938. Its founding date and later replacement building represent different chapters in the church’s history.
The region’s transportation history is also part of its story. In the 1880s, a new townsite was laid out at the junction of the Corpus Christi, San Diego & Rio Grande and San Antonio & Aransas Pass railway lines. Los Preseños was established on the banks of San Fernando Creek, about two miles east of present-day Alice. The settlement developed along a trade route connecting Corpus Christi with San Diego, Laredo, and Eagle Pass.
Museums, Music, and Historic Themes
The Orange Grove Museum illustrates life around the turn of the 20th century with a 1907 covered wagon, a railroad car, a Ford Model T, and period exhibits. These vehicles and artifacts from the era combine to create a vivid historical focus.
The Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame Museum is dedicated to honoring Tejano music. It has been the official state site for Tejano music since 2001. This gives music history its own place among the region’s themes, alongside the stories of ranching, settlement, and railroads.
At Alice Airport, the Maxine Flournoy Third Coast Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force houses restored, airworthy World War II aircraft. These include a 1940 Stearman trainer. The Jim Wells County Courthouse and Fort Casa Blanca represent other chapters in the region’s history: Fort Casa Blanca was the first building in what is now Jim Wells County and disappeared during the 20th century.
The Jim Wells County Fair is held annually in Alice. If a fair is important to your travel plans, consider its event dates when choosing your stay.
