The Big Thicket National Preserve encompasses landscape units and water corridors in Hardin County, Texas. The John Henry Kirby Memorial State Forest is a 600-acre forest area in Hardin County. Forest, water, and Sour Lake’s architectural history offer distinct highlights for a stay.

Forests, Trails, and Landscapes

During business hours, the John Henry Kirby Memorial State Forest is accessible only on foot; special arrangements are required for vehicle access. Check access conditions before your arrival.

The Kirby Nature Trail is a loop trail through dense brush and a swamp with bald cypress trees; Village Creek can also be seen. The trail has three loop sections: an inner loop of 1.5 miles, a cypress loop of 0.3 miles, and an outer loop of 0.9 miles. The cypress loop is therefore the shortest section, while the inner loop is the longest. The Longleaf Pine Trail offers a different perspective on the forest: it leads from the visitor center to an observation platform in a young longleaf pine forest.

More than 20 miles of trails run through the Turkey Creek Unit along Turkey Creek. An extensive area of pitcher plant bogs stretches along the Pitcher Plant Trail. The creekside trails and the bog landscape offer different natural features within this unit.

Paddling Routes and Creek Access

The Village Creek Paddling Trail is 21 miles long and has several access points. Individual sections can be paddled in two to five hours; the actual duration depends on water levels and current. This time range is therefore meaningful for planning only when considered alongside the prevailing water conditions.

Another loop route is the Cooks Lake to Scatterman Paddling Trail in the Beaumont Unit; it is 4.8 miles long. In the Village Creek Corridor Unit, creek access points are located at FM 418, TX 327, Baby Galvez Road, and US 96.

The Village Creek: US 96 Boat Launch provides access for canoes, kayaks, and small boats. It also has parking for cars and boat trailers; the facility is managed by Hardin County.

Village Creek State Park also offers opportunities for outings on the water: stand-up paddleboards, single and tandem kayaks, and canoes are available to rent. Which watercraft are available depends on park operations and conditions. At Roy E. Larsen Sandyland Sanctuary, visitors can canoe, kayak, and fish on Village Creek.

Architectural History in Sour Lake

The Sour Lake Downtown Historic District comprises 14 buildings dating from 1903 to 1966. Built in 1903 for the First National Bank, the building is the first brick building in Sour Lake and also the oldest building in the historic district.

The district’s history thus spans 1903 to 1966, while the bank building marks its earliest point. Nature trails, paddling routes, and architectural history offer different ways to plan a trip around your interests.
