Those considering Hale as a travel destination can shape their stay around different cultural themes: from the prehistory of the Southern High Plains to art and stage performances. Plainview adds historic sites, murals and a golf course. You can weigh whether to focus your trip primarily on collections, architectural history or individual activities.

Prehistory and Regional History

The Museum of the Llano Estacado serves as a repository for the ancient history of the region around Plainview. It focuses on the regional history and prehistory of the Southern High Plains, also known as the Llano Estacado. Topics presented include the region’s ranching and railroad history. The exhibits include a tack room, a blacksmith shop, a water tank and a wooden windmill.

Regional geology is another focus: You can see local minerals, rocks and fossils, as well as an exhibit featuring a Pleistocene mammoth skull. This brings together different perspectives in time and subject matter—from the geological past to the history of ranching and railroads.

The Plainview Point Monument commemorates a 9,000-year-old archaeological site. It is a national historic landmark associated with distinctive spear points and the fossilized remains of about 100 extinct bison. For directions, the monument is near 300 Joliet Street on the Plainview Hike & Bike Trail.

Architectural History and Collections

The Plainview Commercial Historic District has more than 60 surviving commercial buildings from the early 20th century. Their architectural styles range from Classical Revival to Art Moderne. The Hale County Courthouse provides a specific point of reference: It is a Classical Revival-style building completed in 1910.

The Hale County Farm and Ranch Museum is housed in a restored 1911 Santa Fe railroad depot, a 1907 farmhouse and other buildings. Its collection also illustrates the agricultural focus: It includes restored antique tractors, historic farm equipment and pedal vehicles. The buildings and collection offer different perspectives—the historic structures provide the setting, while the vehicles and equipment highlight agricultural work.

Other memorial sites honor people and their achievements. The Plainview Walk of Fame honors former and current residents of Plainview and Hale County for their accomplishments. Each honoree is recognized with an engraved granite plaque permanently installed in the sidewalk. The Centennial Circle of Honor commemorates Plainview’s leading figures from the past 100 years. The Jimmy Dean Museum honors the life and legacy of Jimmy Dean, including his career as an entertainer and his later success in the sausage business.

Art, Theater and Things to Do

At the Abraham Art Gallery, you can see art exhibitions in a range of media by local and regional artists, Wayland University artists and alumni, as well as rotating national exhibitions. The Fair Theatre hosts plays, musicals, films and symphonic performances. The two venues appeal to different cultural interests: visual art on the one hand, and stage and film on the other.

There is also art to discover in public spaces: More than 20 murals can be viewed downtown and at other locations in Plainview. The number of murals may change over time. You can include individual murals as stops in your itinerary.

Getting There and Individual Activities

Plainview is located on Interstate 27 and Highway 70. Highway 70 runs east-west from the DFW area to New Mexico. If golf suits your trip, Plainview has an 18-hole golf course. You can book a tee time by calling 806-293-2445; it is best to confirm your appointment before traveling.

When choosing what to visit, you can weigh the different focuses: The monument offers an archaeological perspective, the museums combine regional history with collections and historic buildings, and the gallery, theater and murals offer other points of interest. This makes it possible to plan your time around the themes that interest you most.
