You can explore The Colony during your stay through a range of recreational interests: nature trails, activities at Lewisville Lake, and places for sports, entertainment and history. The trails differ in length, surface and natural setting; some recreational activities are seasonal or tied to event dates. This lets you weigh which themes matter for your trip without committing to a fixed itinerary in advance.

Compare nature trails by length and surface

The Colony Shoreline Trail is 3.5 miles long and runs as an environmentally sensitive hiking and biking trail through unspoiled nature. It begins at Stewart Creek Park and ends at Ridgepointe Park. The Tribute Shoreline Nature Trail also runs through unspoiled nature: its 2.5 miles lead to an overlook at the tip of a peninsula with views of Lewisville Lake.

The Hidden Cove Nature Trail is 2.28 miles long, runs along Lewisville Lake and passes through the southern part of 720-acre Hidden Cove Park. If you compare the three routes by length, this is the shortest distance listed; at 3.5 miles, the Colony Shoreline Trail is the longest. For a different comparison, consider two concrete paths: the Park Loop Trail has 3.5 miles of concrete surface, while the 3.3-mile Austin Ranch Trail runs as a concrete path through The Colony’s Austin Ranch area. This lets you compare the nature-related descriptions with the information on surface and trail length.

Recreation at Lewisville Lake

Stewart Creek Park on Lewisville Lake offers camping, boat ramps, a swimming beach, a fishing pier and other waterside recreational opportunities. Hidden Cove Park on the lake also combines boat ramps and fishing with a sandy beach and other opportunities to relax by the water. An admission fee applies at Hidden Cove Park; day and annual permits are available on site. If you plan a visit to the park, factor this requirement into your plans.

Hidden Cove Park is also the namesake of the Hidden Cove Nature Trail. This lets you take the 2.28-mile trail length into account and compare the lakeside scenery with the park’s other offerings. The facilities described range from waterside activities to walking trails; which ones suit your stay depends on the themes you have in mind for your trip.

Sports and seasonal water activities

The Colony Aquatic Park has four swimming pools, including the Splash Zone for the youngest visitors. A heated indoor pool is also available there during the winter and spring months. Kayak programs are also offered. These seasonal differences can help with planning: a winter or spring visit can include the indoor pool mentioned, while you should check the specific dates for kayak programs.

Hawaiian Waters is a seasonal attraction. Its listed attractions include Breaker Bay wave pool, the Kona Cooler lazy river and The Torpedo water slide. Check the operating details for the water attractions when planning your trip. If you’re looking for wheeled activities, Wheel Zone Bike & Skate Park has ramps, platforms, rails and benches for biking, skateboarding and inline skating. Pawsome Playground has separate areas for small and large dogs, covering 0.85 acres and 2.1 acres, respectively.

Entertainment and history

The 180-foot Grandscape Wheel has air-conditioned gondolas. Grandscape Stage & Lawn is equipped for concerts, movies and fashion shows; the specific program may change. Truck Yard offers live music with local artists and oversized yard games. If you’d like to include an event in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant offering.

Historic sites also have their own areas of focus. Bridges Cemetery has an official historical marker from the Texas Historical Commission, dated 2018. An informational sign at Historical Park describes where the present-day community first began to develop. A historic Denton County bridge has been installed at Greenway Park. These places differ from the recreational offerings at the lake and the event venues: they offer options for a trip where history also plays a part.

The Colony Parks and Recreation Department hosts two disc golf tournaments each year, one in January and one in August. The tournaments are open to all skill levels; check the specific dates for your trip. When looking for hotels in The Colony, you can use the interests you want to shape your stay as a guide—for example, nature trails, activities at the lake or seasonal offerings.
