Lake Dallas is a resort community on the shores of Lewisville Lake, ten miles south of Denton in southeastern Denton County. When searching for a hotel, the different sides of the community can help you plan your stay: lakeside trails and parks offer specific starting points for activities, while the cemetery and transportation history provide a local historical focus. Events are another topic to consider when planning your trip.

Trails and Shoreline on Lewisville Lake

The Willow Grove Park Trail winds through trees along the shore of Lake Lewisville. Much of Willow Grove Park borders the lake, putting wooded trails and the lakeside location at the center of the experience. The Denton Katy Trail follows a different route: It runs north to south along the western edge of Lake Dallas and is suitable for walking, running, and cycling.

The two trails are described by different features that can help guide your choice: The Willow Grove Park Trail features winding paths through trees along the lakeshore, while the Denton Katy Trail runs north to south along the western edge of the city and is suited to several types of activity. If you're planning a stay that includes outdoor exercise, you can use this information to decide what you want to focus on during your visit.

Parks for a Range of Activities

City Park has two mini playing fields at the tennis courts. Its soccer fields comprise five fields for soccer-related activities. Community Park has a different focus: It offers a large grassy area for casual recreation, including playing Frisbee and soccer practice, as well as for children to play. The facilities described here therefore differ in their offerings: City Park focuses on fields, while Community Park has an open grassy area for a variety of uses.

Fishing is also allowed at Willow Grove Park, provided you have a valid fishing license. If fishing is part of your plans, remember that you need a license and check the current licensing requirements before your visit, as they may change. Fishing adds another specific park activity to the lakeside trails; it is separate from the playing fields and grassy areas at the other parks.

Local History and Remembrance

Swisher Cemetery has more than 1,100 graves. The oldest grave dates to 1867. The cemetery is also the final resting place of numerous veterans of the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. The year of the oldest grave and the long list of conflicts provide different points of reference for local history.

Another historical connection is the crossing of Lewisville Lake: In 2009, the North Texas Tollway Authority restored the important transportation link between Lake Dallas and Little Elm with a 1.7-mile bridge over the lake. This is a clearly dated chapter in the area's transportation history. Together with the lakeside location, it shows that Lake Dallas can be understood both through its shoreline and through its documented connection to Little Elm.

Events Throughout the Year

The Lake Cities 4th of July celebration is a family-oriented community event with free activities and music. Listed events include a patriotic parade, music, food, competitions, and other activities. Individual events may change. If you want to plan your stay around the celebration, check the latest event dates and schedule.

Holiday events also include Merry on Main, a free event, and Trunk or Treat. Trunk or Treat is family-friendly and offers a fun, safe alternative to traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating on Halloween. Schedules for these events may also change, so factor current dates into your plans. This can help you decide whether the parks, local history, or an event best fits the reason for your trip.
