In Delta County, the landscape ranges from wetlands and fishing opportunities to railroad and architectural history. Cooper WMA includes hardwood bottomland forests, mixed hardwood stands on higher ground, native prairies, and riparian habitats. It also features a riparian zone, managed and numerous natural wetlands, as well as flooded, dead standing trees. These diverse habitats give the landscape its distinctive character.

Nature and Activities on the Water

At Jim Chapman Lake, you can fish from a boat, a pier, or the shore. These three options offer different perspectives on the same activity: you can fish from the water or choose a pier or the shore. The 4.6-mile Coyote Run Trail in the South Sulphur Unit of Cooper Lake State Park is designated for biking. This lets you combine a nature outing with a specific bike route.

Cooper Lake State Park is 70 miles northeast of Dallas and is located in Delta County and Hopkins County. The two units described here have different features. The Doctors Creek Unit has a designated sandy beach for unsupervised swimming. The unit also has two day-use areas with water, tables, and grills, as well as a playground. Access is via State Highway 154 and FM 1529. These road details help with directions, while the beach, day-use areas, and playground offer specific options for spending time outdoors.

Architectural History and Memorial Sites

The Cooper Rail Depot was built of brick in the Spanish Revival style in 1913 for the Texas Midland Railroad. It is one of only two surviving depots still standing along the line. Harry Patterson bought the building and dedicated it as a local history museum to present the heritage of Cooper and Delta County. Its architecture, railroad connection, and later dedication each tell a different part of its story.

The Delta County Courthouse is another architectural landmark: Hoke Smith designed the building, which was constructed by the WPA in the Art Moderne style. Its described features include a stepped massing, cast stone, and fluted pilasters between the windows. Oaklawn Cemetery has been designated a Historic Texas Cemetery since 2009.

Other memorial sites preserve different chapters of regional history. The DeSpain Bridge stood where the Bonham-Jefferson Road crossed the South Sulphur River and served the region’s cotton trade for about 20 years. The Pioneer Smith Brothers memorial marker commemorates men who helped build Delta County on the Texas frontier. The original site of East Texas Normal College at 600 SE First St. in Cooper is designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark; its historic marker dates to 1967. In the settlement of Hobbs Thicket, a two-room schoolhouse was built in the early 1880s.
