West Columbia: History and Heritage
Accommodation in West Columbia
Different historical perspectives take center stage: the site of the first Capitol building of the Republic of Texas, the story of Texas’s creation in West Columbia, and the historic rooms of Varner-Hogg Plantation. The ways to visit also differ: a walking trail leads past a series of stops, exhibits and artifacts convey history in the museum, and self-guided tours are available at the plantation. If you want to focus your stay on cultural history, you can choose the format you prefer—a walking route, a museum visit, or an exploration of historic buildings.
Capitol of Texas Park and Cistern
Capitol of Texas Park is located on the site of the first Capitol building of the Republic of Texas. Its walking trail includes 21 stops, making a visit to the park a series of places to pause. This format differs from the way history is presented in the museum: the park focuses on the walking trail, while exhibits and artifacts shape the museum experience. A cistern, believed to date from the 1830s, was also discovered during construction work in the park. The find adds an archaeological trace to the Capitol site and offers a second point of interest for visitors exploring early history.
Columbia Historical Museum and Rosenwald School
Through exhibits, artifacts, and knowledgeable attendants, the Columbia Historical Museum tells the story of the creation of Texas in West Columbia. The Columbia Rosenwald School is part of the museum’s history and became part of the Columbia Historical Museum. It opened to the public in October 2009. The school is considered the nation’s only fully restored Rosenwald School presented as an interpretive center by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The dates refer to different historical contexts: the cistern is believed to date from the 1830s, while the school opened to the public in October 2009.
The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; visits are also available by appointment at 979-345-6125. It is also available for school and organization tours and events. For planning, you can use the regular opening hours or arrange an appointment.
Self-Guided Tours at Varner-Hogg Plantation
Varner-Hogg Plantation offers self-guided tours. Both floors of the main house, the smokehouse, and the 1920s kitchen are open to visitors. Visitors can also tour pecan orchards on the grounds. The experience includes both historic interiors and a look at the plantation grounds. The pecan orchards add a distinct outdoor area to the interiors, which visitors can include in their visit. You can decide whether to focus your tour on the rooms or set aside additional time for the pecan orchards. This is a different way to visit from the museum experience: you explore the historic buildings on a self-guided tour, while the museum tells its story through exhibits, artifacts, and knowledgeable attendants.
