In Brazoria, Gulf Coast travel ideas meet natural areas and sites connected to the county’s history. When planning your trip, you can choose a focus: beaches and water, nature watching, or historical insights. The options vary considerably, from a long stretch of beach and trails through different landscapes to museums and guided tours.

Beaches, Water, and Coastal Towns

Follett’s Island offers a 13-mile stretch of publicly accessible beach on the Gulf of Mexico. Visitors can fish, swim, and camp there year-round. If you want to make a range of coastal activities the focus of your stay, this beach may be one option that suits your plans.

Quintana is an island between the mouths of the Old Brazos River and the New Brazos River. The protected Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary is located on the island. Visitors can climb an observation tower and explore interconnected trails there. This makes it an appealing spot for nature watching and a walk through the bird sanctuary.

Quintana Beach County Park offers a different mix of activities, including hiking trails, a beach area for pedestrians, a lighted fishing pier, and access to the West Jetty. Other options include bird and nature watching, fishing, swimming, surfing, beachcombing, and shell collecting. At San Luis Pass County Park, options include a boat ramp, bay fishing, boating, bird and nature watching, and beachcombing. Shells can be collected at nearby beaches.

At Surfside Jetty County Park, a walk by the water also comes with a historical connection: the park includes the site of the Velasco Town Battery, which dates to before the 1860s. The paved pier is about 0.6 miles long and can be used for walking and fishing. These activities differ from those on Follett’s Island: here, the pier and historic site share the spotlight in the same park.

Nature Preserves and Nature Watching

The Cannan Bend Recreation Area in the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge has a freshwater lake open for fishing and a remnant coastal forest. The Big Slough Auto Tour in the same refuge offers a different perspective on the landscape, passing through marshes, tidal creeks, ponds, and prairies. You can choose between a fishing lake with adjacent coastal forest and a drive through several types of landscape.

The San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge manages salt marshes, saltwater lakes, coastal prairies, freshwater lakes and marshes, intermittent streams, and riparian and bottomland forests. Visitors can enjoy three recreation areas and ten hiking trails. More than 320 bird species are found there, making nature watching and hiking different ways to explore the refuge. Camp Mohawk County Park also has a distinctive natural feature: it is home to the only stand of native pines in Brazoria County.

County History and Places to Visit

The Stephen F. Austin-Munson Historical County Park centers on a 76-foot statue of Stephen F. Austin. The park also has a visitor and information center, a gift shop, and picnic areas. Reenactments, living history programs, and interpretive events take place there throughout the year. If you’re interested in the visitor facilities, check the latest visitor information in advance.

The Brazoria County Historical Museum is located in the county’s historic courthouse, built in 1897. Its artifacts reflect the county’s cultural and demographic diversity. In Lake Jackson, Sea Center Texas offers a different thematic experience: the facility serves as a marine aquarium, fish hatchery, and educational center. Visitors can see aquariums and exhibits about Texas marine life; the grounds also include a redfish hatchery, an outdoor wetlands exhibit, and a fishing pond for young people.

Tours at Varner-Hogg Plantation share the site’s history and its connection to the history and commerce of Texas. They also cover the stories of enslaved families and the site’s former sugarcane production, cattle raising, and oil production. Reservations may be required for tours. If you’re looking for a historical focus, you can choose between exhibits in the courthouse, programs at Stephen F. Austin-Munson Historical County Park, and a tour covering various aspects of the Plantation’s history.
