As you plan, you can first decide whether historic sites, nature observation or outdoor activities will be your main focus.

Culture, Museum and Park History

Discovery Park of America is a 100,000-square-foot museum in a landscaped heritage park in Union City, Tennessee. The museum and its grounds combine a cultural destination with a designed landscape setting.

The historic Capitol Theatre in downtown Union City was built in 1927 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A fountain was reinstalled in Kiwanis Park in 1897. The park serves as a venue for weddings, birthday parties and larger community events—bringing together park history and present-day event use.

Union City's Parks and Recreation system also offers a variety of recreational spaces: it operates around 250 acres of facilities with picnic areas, walking trails, tennis courts, playgrounds and a model airfield. The offerings range from opportunities to spend time outdoors to sports and play areas.

Rivers, Protected Areas and Birdlife

The two Wildlife Management Areas differ in both size and geographic layout. Obion River WMA is located in Tennessee's Obion, Weakley and Gibson counties and covers about 8,500 acres. Three Rivers WMA covers 1,577 acres, is located in Obion County and borders the Obion River. Prairie Warblers, Field Sparrows and Common Yellowthroats are common at Three Rivers WMA in summer. Wildlife conditions vary with the river's water level, and seasonal sightings may also vary.

Reelfoot Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Obion County is designated in Tennessee as a location for observing the Cerulean Warbler; the species' presence is seasonal. Obion County also lies along the Mississippi Flyway and hosts more than 100,000 geese and 200,000 ducks each year. These figures give birdlife a distinct place alongside the region's river areas and protected areas.
