Marshall County offers several starting points for planning a trip, from nature and the river to history, art, and recreation. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide which of these interests you’d like to focus on during your stay.

Nature and River Landscape

In northeastern Marshall County lies the 58-acre Wilson School Road Forest and Cedar Glades nature area. It consists of limestone cedar glades. Three rare plants are known to grow there: Running Glade Clover (Trifolium calcaricum), Carolina Anemone (Anemone caroliniana), and Glade Cress (Leavenworthia exigua var. exigua). These named species and the distinctive landscape give the nature area a clear focus.

The Duck River provides habitat for more than 50 mussel species. It is also designated a Tennessee Scenic River in the “Class II Pastoral River Area” category. South of Chapel Hill, Henry Horton State Park lies on the banks of the Duck River. Its 20 miles of trails are intended for hikers of all experience levels. The park also offers opportunities for kayaking, tubing, and fishing on the Duck River. When planning, you can therefore choose between hiking trails and water-based activities.

Museum, Art, and History

The Marshall County Historical Museum houses hundreds of artifacts from Marshall County and its residents. Exhibits include primitive hand tools, a loom, handmade furniture, World War I and World War II memorabilia, historic clothing, quilts, photo albums, and early cameras. Admission is free; visits by prior appointment are welcome and recommended.

The Marshall County Art Guild maintains a gallery at the southern end of historic Lewisburg Square. It has space for art classes and workshops, and new works of art are displayed every two months. The rotating artworks offer a different perspective from the museum’s historical collection.

The Dixie Theatre in Lewisburg was built at the courthouse square in 1936. For history enthusiasts, this presents two distinct points of interest: the museum focuses on a collection of objects from the county and its residents, while the theater’s construction date and location connect it to Lewisburg’s history.

Recreation for Different Interests

Pickers Creek Winery offers an experience featuring wine and cheese, an art gallery, and a walk through the vineyards. The “Music on the Porch” event series takes place on Saturday evenings from April 1 through October 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. Check the dates before planning a specific visit around an event.

KidsVille is an interactive indoor playground for children ages six months to twelve years. It features several slides, a mini Ninja Warrior zone, a ball-play area, tunnels, and a mini zip line. For planning a trip with children, the difference from the offerings at Henry Horton State Park is clear: KidsVille is an indoor playground, while the park focuses on hiking trails and activities on the river. The age range helps you assess whether it’s suitable for the children traveling with you.
