When looking for a hotel in Athens, you can first decide which interests will shape your stay. These include trails in Athens Regional Park and on the Eureka Trail, as well as museums, art, concerts and the Mayfield Dairy Farms Visitor Center. The offerings differ in specific ways: for trails, length, surface and permitted uses are important points of comparison; for cultural attractions, the collection, permanent exhibits, galleries, stage and history are central. This helps you tailor your trip planning to your own interests.

Trails and outdoor activities

Athens Regional Park has a 1.0-mile loop trail along the park road, as well as a 3.1-mile nature and mountain biking trail. The longer route is therefore more than three times as long as the loop trail; it also differs in being designated as a nature and mountain biking trail. The park also has fishing lakes, adding another outdoor focus alongside the two trails.

The Eureka Trail offers a different comparison: it consists of 5.6 miles of gravel trail and is a multi-use trail for hikers, cyclists and horseback riders. At 5.6 miles, it is longer than both trails in Athens Regional Park. The descriptions also differ: three user groups are specified for the Eureka Trail, while one of the park trails is classified as a nature and mountain biking trail. There are restrooms at the Eureka Trail trailhead.

Museum, stage and galleries

The McMinn County Living Heritage Museum has more than 12,000 artifacts and 30 permanent exhibition rooms. These two figures describe different aspects of the museum: the size of its collection and the number of rooms for permanent exhibits. If you are primarily interested in a collection during your visit, you can compare this information with the Arts Center’s differently focused offerings.

Alongside its galleries, the Arts Center also features a stage: the black box theater has 200 seats. Four galleries feature rotating exhibits of local student art, as well as traveling exhibitions curated by professionals. The cultural program thus offers both a collection and permanent exhibition rooms, as well as changing art exhibitions and theater.

Concerts, history and more

The Sounds of Summer concert series takes place at Market Park in historic downtown Athens. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular concert, check the series dates in advance.

For a look at local history, the Golden Rule Mural recalls the story of the building, which was known as “The Golden Rule” more than 110 years ago. The Quilt Trail celebrates the history and art of quilting. These two offerings have different focuses: the mural refers to the building’s former name, while the Quilt Trail centers on the craft and its art.

The Mayfield Dairy Farms Visitor Center has an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. This provides a clearly defined culinary focus for your trip planning, alongside Athens’ trails and cultural offerings.
