Mcminn County lies between Chattanooga and Knoxville. Its cultural offerings range from railroad depots and local history museums to visual art, theater, and concerts. Nature and outdoor activities include walking trails in Hiwassee Meadowland Park, the Hiwassee River, and the Eureka Trail between Athens and Englewood. This gives you different ways to shape your trip: around history, art and the performing arts, or outdoor activities.

Walking Trails and River Activities

Hiwassee Meadowland Park has walking trails and borders an original route of the Trail of Tears from 1838. People paddle and fish on the Hiwassee River in the region. The Hiwassee River–Calhoun Boat Ramp provides access for launching small boats, canoes, and kayaks, and is also used for fishing.

Depots and Mill History

The L&N Depot houses the museum “Growing UP With The L&N: Life and Times in a Railroad Town.” Built in 1854, Niota Depot is Tennessee’s oldest surviving railroad depot. It represents Tennessee’s industrial history from before the Civil War and the war’s effects on rural Tennessee. The Englewood Textile Museum offers a perspective on the past and present history of the Englewood mill.

The historical themes differ in scope: Niota points to Tennessee’s industrial history and the effects of the Civil War, while Englewood focuses on the changing history of a single mill. The L&N Depot, by contrast, houses a museum whose title centers on life and times in a railroad town. These distinct perspectives make railroad heritage and local industrial history separate themes of the trip.

Museums, Art, and the Performing Arts

The McMinn County Living Heritage Museum has more than 30 exhibit areas covering the county’s history from the Cherokee and pioneer eras through the 20th century. It also displays artifacts from the 1946 GI Rebellion, known as the “Battle of Athens.”

The Arts Center in Athens hosts visual art exhibitions, theater performances, and concerts. In Etowah, the Gem Players are the official resident theater company; the historic Gem Theater is their main venue. The Swift Museum in Athens displays several Swift aircraft as well as two U.S. Air Force T-35 Buckaroo trainer aircraft. Staffing for visitors may vary.

Dairy History and Festival

Dairy also has historical ties to Athens: in 1910, the Mayfield family began delivering milk to customers in their hometown of Athens, Tennessee. MooFest is McMinn County’s dairy festival.

The Eureka Trail and Practical Information

The Eureka Trail starts in Athens and ends in Englewood after 5.6 miles through small towns and wooded areas. The Athens Trailhead has restrooms and a bicycle repair station.
