Historic farms and battlefields, museums, trails of varying lengths and activities along the Catawba River shape travel ideas for York. A simple question can help you plan: should you focus on cultural history, outdoor activity or time on the water? Each destination has its own highlights—from the Naturalist Center to a self-guided trail.

Cultural History at Farms and Battlefields

Historic Brattonsville includes more than 30 buildings from the Colonial and Antebellum periods, including two house museums. The site also includes a Revolutionary War battlefield with an educational trail. This historic site brings together everyday history and the memory of war.

The Living History Farm at Kings Mountain State Park also offers a glimpse into life on a 19th-century Southern farm. The reconstructed farm includes a barn, a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop and a carpentry shop, as well as farm animals. Historic Brattonsville’s Heritage Farm Program has a different focus: it keeps rare breeds such as Gulf Coast sheep, Devon cattle and Ossabaw Island pigs, and demonstrates historic farming techniques and everyday activities with costumed interpreters.

At Kings Mountain National Military Park, a museum and a self-guided trail provide further ways to explore the battle. The museum features numerous audiovisual displays and artifacts related to the battle; the 25-minute park film “Frontier Battles: Kings Mountain 1780” is shown in the auditorium. The 1.5-mile hiking trail crosses the battlefield from the perspectives of Patriot and Loyalist militiamen. Interpretive signs along the way explain different aspects of the battle.

Museums and Catawba Culture

At the Museum of York County, you can explore more than 2,000 exhibits hands-on in the Naturalist Center. The museum also includes the Settlemyre Planetarium, with digital projection and new programs. The Catawba Cultural Center preserves and shares the culture of the Catawba Indian Nation. The Yehasure Trail leads from the center to the Catawba River, with interpretive signs along the way. Allison Creek Park also provides access to a visit to a historic South Carolina state marker near the site of the ironworks.

Also note that the McCelvey Center is currently closed for repairs. If you plan to visit, check its status before you arrive.

Trails by Length and Landscape

Kings Mountain State Park offers two trails of distinctly different lengths: the Kings Mountain National Recreation Trail is 16 miles long, while the Ridgeline Trail is 1.8 miles long. The Catawba River Trail at Riverwalk offers another option at 3.35 miles. This paved multi-use trail is open to walkers, runners and cyclists. Restrooms are available at the Riverwalk and River Park parking lots and at the trailhead; a canoe and kayak launch is located near the trailhead.

The York Greenway is used by cyclists and walkers. Most of it is wooded and follows a former railroad corridor. Details about the Catawba River Trail’s length and surface and the York Greenway’s former railroad use help distinguish the trails without combining them into a single route.

Along the Catawba River: Scenery and Recreation

A 30-mile stretch of the Catawba River running through York County and Lancaster and Chester counties was designated a State Scenic River in June 2008. The Catawba Scenic River corridor and adjacent uplands include extensive areas of undeveloped forest, as well as a mix of agricultural and pastureland. The river offers opportunities for recreational fishing and boating. Fishing is also available at Kings Mountain State Park, on Lake York and Lake Crawford.

Ebenezer Park has three boat ramps that are open 365 days a year from dawn until dark. The Fort Mill Access in York County has a boat ramp and a parking lot. If your trip is focused on the water, you can consider this information alongside the river and fishing opportunities when planning.

Cafés in York County

The YoCo Coffee Trail offers another way to explore York County: this self-guided loop takes you to more than ten independently operated cafés. A café tour adds a culinary focus to the area’s historic sites, trails and water activities. You can plan your trip around your interests, whether you’re more drawn to history, outdoor activity, time on the water or cafés.
