The Black River shapes the natural landscape of Williamsburg County: a 75-mile stretch of the river runs through Williamsburg County, Clarendon County and Georgetown County in South Carolina, and is designated a State Scenic River under the South Carolina Scenic Rivers Act. The Black River is a free-flowing blackwater river, its banks lined with dense, undisturbed swamp forest. The river and forest are thus at the heart of a nature-focused experience that is clearly distinct from the region’s historic buildings and museums.

River and Forest Landscapes

Wee Tee State Forest also gives a sense of the scale of the landscape: it covers 19,380 acres of bottomland hardwood forest and borders the Santee River for approximately 18 miles. The figures describe different aspects—the forest’s area and the stretch of river it borders. Nature lovers will find another expansive landscape alongside the Black River.

Gilland Memorial Park on the Black River has a single-lane boat ramp. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset; check its opening hours before you arrive. The Williamsburg County Recreation Complex in Kingstree offers a different kind of facility: it has a walking path. This clearly distinguishes the available options—a boat ramp on the river and a walking path at the recreation complex—without combining them into a single route.

Kingstree and Architectural History

The Kingstree Historic District includes 48 buildings and properties along Main Street, Academy Street and Hampton Street in downtown. These three streets provide a specific sense of the historic district’s location. A notable example of the area’s architectural history is the Williamsburg County Courthouse: built around 1823, it was designed by Robert Mills in the Roman Neoclassical style.

The former plantation houses also tell distinct chapters of architectural history. Thorntree House was built in 1749 as a plantation house for James Witherspoon. Visits are by appointment only; arrange appointments through the Williamsburg Historical Museum at 843-355-3306. New Market Plantation dates from around 1820. New Market is considered an excellent example of a vernacular plantation house from the Federal or Early National period. Its approximate date and architectural classification offer two different points of reference for placing the house in its historical context.

Museums and Local History

The Williamsburgh Historical Museum in Kingstree is housed in the former Carnegie Library building. The Carnegie Library was completed in 1917. The C. Williams Rush Museum of African-American Arts & Culture focuses on a distinct subject: the history and contributions of African Americans, particularly in Kingstree and Williamsburg County. Together, these subjects give visitors several ways to explore local history, from the architectural history of a library building to the contributions of African Americans in the region.

Markets, Muscadines and Barbecue

Four community-based farmers markets are part of everyday life in Williamsburg County. Visitors can find fresh produce and handmade items there and meet local farmers. As each market has its own schedule, it’s a good idea to check the dates before your trip.

Williams Vineyard & Farm hosts a Muscadine Festival every year over Labor Day weekend. If the event fits your travel plans, check the dates for that year. Scott’s Bar-B-Que in Hemingway offers another distinctive taste: its barbecue is served with a vinegar-based sauce that has a little heat. Market visits, the festival held at a particular time of year, and this distinctive sauce offer different ways for travelers to include local produce and regional food culture in their plans.

When planning your trip, you can choose from several distinct interests: the blackwater landscape along the Black River, the forest and river at Wee Tee State Forest, historic architecture in Kingstree, and local markets and food culture. If Thorntree House is on your list, plan your visit in advance because an appointment is required.
