Oconee County combines river and lake activities with hiking trails, historic sites and outdoor art. To plan your stay, you can first consider whether water, nature trails or cultural destinations will shape your visit.

Rivers, Lake and Waterfalls

The Andrew Pickens Ranger District in Oconee County is part of the Sumter National Forest. In the district, the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River offers opportunities for paddling and fishing. Ramsey Creek and the Chauga River meet at Chau Ram Park, where a 160-foot suspension bridge spans the Chauga River.

South Cove Park is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains on Lake Keowee. The park covers 48 acres, and the lake covers 18,500 acres. Fishing, boating, sailing and water skiing are available there across more than three water-access areas. The park is also home to more than 200 bird species, including bald eagles and peregrine falcons. This means that a range of activities and birdwatching opportunities are available along the same lakeshore.

Waterfalls are also among the destinations mentioned. Reedy Branch Falls is about a five-minute walk from the road. At Stumphouse Park, you can access Issaqueena Falls. An easy five-minute walk from the right side of the parking lot leads to an observation platform overlooking the waterfall.

Compare hiking trails by length and character

At Oconee Station, a 1.5-mile Interpretive Trail loops around the four-acre pond. The Oconee Connector Trail links Oconee Station and Oconee State Park over approximately four miles. In Sumter National Forest, the Station Cove Falls Trail is half a mile long. The Foothills Access Trail is 1.2 miles long and rated moderate to strenuous.

The distance information helps put different trail lengths into perspective: the Interpretive Trail loops around a pond, the Connector links two named places, and the Station Cove Falls Trail is the shortest of the routes mentioned here. For the Foothills Access Trail, the rating adds another point of comparison to the distance. For Reedy Branch Falls, a walking time is given rather than a trail length. When planning, you can use these details to decide whether to choose a route based on its length, course or rating.

History and art in the county

The South Carolina State Militia established Oconee Station in 1792. The Richards House near Oconee Station is one of the earliest brick houses in the Upstate. In addition to access to Issaqueena Falls, Stumphouse Park has a covered bridge, a Civil War-era tunnel, shared hiking and mountain biking trails, and picnic areas. History, structures and trails are therefore different aspects of a visit to the park.

The Oconee Mural Trail is a self-guided way to see dozens of outdoor murals by local artists throughout Oconee County. Another specifically named art series is the Ram Cat Alley CATS murals: twelve murals in Norton Thompson Park in Seneca. If you want to include art in your trip, you can choose between a countywide selection and a specific location with a named series.
