Scotts Mills: Local History and Experiences
Accommodation in Scotts Mills
Scotts Mills brings together local history, Scotts Mills City Park, Camp Dakota, and Abiqua Wind Vineyard & Winery. Reservations are required for Camp Dakota; it’s a good idea to check current seasonal details and event dates.
Local History in Churches, a Museum, and Mills
Christian Church was built in 1897 and is now home to the Scotts Mills Area Historical Society. Friends Church was built in 1894 and remains a local landmark. Its current meeting house replaced a building constructed shortly beforehand in 1893 and was built from reclaimed lumber. Together, these churches offer different insights into local history: Christian Church’s present-day use by the Historical Society is part of its story, while Friends Church’s connection to the area is shaped by its building history and landmark status.
The name Scotts Mills also points to the area’s milling history: the settlement was named in 1866 after the Scott brothers’ milling business. As early as 1847, Thomas McKay first built a sawmill in the area along Butte Creek, followed by a grain mill. A covered bridge was built around 1906 and was used extensively by the community until 1951. These dates tell of different chapters: early economic activity, the origin of the name, and a structure that played a role in community life for many years.
At the Scotts Mills Historical Society and Museum at 210 Grandview Avenue, artifacts showcase the occupations of earlier residents and everyday family life. In addition to churches, mills, and the bridge, work and daily life are also at the heart of local history. The museum’s contents complement the history of the buildings with objects that reflect the lives of people and their families.
Park, Camp Dakota, and Activities
Scotts Mills City Park is located at 330 1st Street and offers a place to enjoy nature and meet up with friends and neighbors. The park can be rented exclusively. This gives it a different focus from the area’s historical attractions: here, nature and gathering with others take center stage.
Camp Dakota is open to the public year-round by reservation and offers camping as well as a wide range of activities for all ages. Advance reservations are required for the ziplines, which are open to the public by appointment. Reservation and activity details may change. If you’re planning to visit Camp Dakota, check these details in advance, especially for an activity that requires a set appointment.
Camp Dakota’s paintball field is a large, wooded area. Its features include bunkers, trenches, wooden structures, old cars, trees, tire piles, and dense vegetation. The setting is defined by a mix of natural and built features. This distinguishes this particular activity from the zipline, for which advance reservations are expressly required.
Wine Tasting and Recurring Events
Abiqua Wind Vineyard & Winery is located on the outskirts of Scotts Mills. During a wine tasting, visitors can choose three of the five wines on offer. The winery also offers Discover Your Palate, an introduction to pairing wine with food and guidance on choosing a suitable wine. The two offerings have different focuses: at the wine tasting, you choose from the wines on offer, while Discover Your Palate focuses on the relationship between food and wine and on making a selection. As details may change seasonally, check the current offerings in advance.
Grange events also offer a specific date to plan around. Every August, it hosts Founders’ Weekend and the Harvest Fair. In November, the Holiday Bazaar takes place on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Check local event dates if you’d like to plan your hotel stay around one of these events.
