For an overnight trip to Marion, you can choose from a variety of themes: a long loop hike through dense forest, historic sites, gardens, and landscapes for observing nature. You can plan your outings according to whether you prefer walking, are interested in history, or want to spend time by a lake.

Hiking, Cycling and History

The Trail of Ten Falls is a 7.2-mile loop hike through a densely forested landscape. Several starting points provide access to the trail, including South Falls District and North Falls District. Its length and loop format give you a concrete guide for planning a hike; when choosing where to start, you can weigh the options among the starting points listed.

At Champoeg State Heritage Area, a historic vote recalls the year 1843, when pioneers voted to form Oregon’s first provisional government. In addition to this historical connection, there are paved paths for hiking and cycling along the Willamette River. The area’s landscape provides habitat for more than 130 bird species. This brings history, outdoor activity, and nature watching together as distinct interests. For cyclists, the connection to the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway is also of interest: Champoeg State Heritage Area is its northern endpoint.

Lakes, Gardens and Nature Watching

Detroit Lake is a nine-mile-long reservoir in the Cascade Mountains. Fishing, boating, and other water sports are available there. Detroit Lake State Recreation Area has two free boat ramps, two reservable boat moorings, and a fishing pier. These facilities accommodate different plans on the water: the ramps are for launching boats, the moorings can be reserved, and the pier is intended for fishing.

The Oregon Garden covers 130 acres and features more than 20 themed gardens. Visitors interested in designed garden spaces will find a different perspective on the landscape here than on the forest trail or along the lake shores. At Mission Lake stands the largest black cottonwood tree in the United States. There are also several ways to enjoy nature watching: the Eagle Marsh Viewing Blind at Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge allows visitors to observe wildlife without hiking. From there, you can look out over a wetland where Canada geese, cinnamon teal, and bald eagles are found. Ankeny Hill Nature Center covers 25 acres and has two accessible trails.

Cultural Sites and Visit Planning

The gardens and nature trails at Deepwood Museum & Gardens are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Temporary closures may occur during private events, so check before your visit to see whether your planned date is affected. Friends of Deepwood manages a Queen Anne Victorian house dating from 1894 and its historic gardens.

At Mount Angel Abbey, architecture meets a place for reflection: the library is housed in a building designed by Alvar Aalto. It is open to guests, visiting scholars, and the general public; check current opening hours before traveling. The Abbey church is open for private prayer during the day. Check the schedule in advance for this as well.

The Oregon State Capitol offers guided tours on weekdays. Self-guided tours are available year-round, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Since guided tour schedules depend on Capitol operations, it is a good idea to check the current schedule. For getting around Salem: most Cherriots bus routes go to the Downtown Transit Center in Salem, three blocks from the Capitol.

The Gilbert House Children's Museum has 16 interactive exhibits that encourage learning through creative play. Its Outdoor Discovery Area is situated between three historic houses in downtown Riverfront Park. This way, your trip plans can combine active pursuits, nature-related activities, and cultural visits, without having to limit your stay to just one kind of experience.
