Camp Sherman on the Metolius River
Accommodation in Camp Sherman
Camp Sherman brings together the Metolius River, hiking, fish viewing, and a community history of its own. Several interests can therefore shape your choice of destination: river and forest scenery, a specific hiking route, fish-viewing facilities, or seasonal gatherings. Consider whether you would like to plan your stay around nature, local history, or an event date. When searching for a hotel in Camp Sherman, you can use these interests as a guide for planning your trip.
River Scenery and Special Places
Camp Sherman is located on the Metolius River, which is designated a Wild and Scenic River. The Camp Sherman Campground is on the riverbank in the Deschutes National Forest. Along the Metolius River, notable places include the Camp Sherman Fish Viewing Platform and the Metolius Research Natural Area. At the Headwaters of the Metolius, the river emerges from an opening in the ground and begins to flow. These named destinations differ: the platform and the Research Natural Area are notable places along the river, while the Headwaters are the focus at its source.
Hiking and Fish Viewing
Hiking is one of the main recreational activities at the Camp Sherman Campground. One specific nearby excursion is the West Metolius River hike. This 5.5-mile out-and-back hike runs from the Lower Canyon Creek Campground to the Wizard Falls Hatchery; the distance refers to the entire round trip. Access and seasonal conditions can change, so check current conditions before setting out.
At the Wizard Falls Hatchery, there is a pond exhibit featuring fish and a platform from which fish in the settling pond can be observed. The pond and platform offer different perspectives: one focuses on the fish exhibit in the pond, the other on observing fish in the settling pond. The hatchery can be reached either through Camp Sherman or via Forest Service Road 14. This makes it possible to think of the site both as a hiking destination and as a place for fish viewing.
Community and Local History
The Camp Sherman Community Hall was built entirely by volunteers in 1949. It is used for Camp Sherman Community Association meetings and public events. The Camp Sherman Store was founded in 1918 by farmers from Sherman County. It offers a grocery store, a deli, and a fly-fishing shop. The two places have different focuses: the hall brings together a history of volunteer work with meetings and events, while the store combines its founding history with food and fly-fishing offerings.
Seasonal Events
Seasonal events organized by the Camp Sherman Community Association include the annual Pancake Breakfast in July and the Cabin Fever Potlucks in January and February. The breakfast is a fundraising event. The potlucks bring friends, families, and neighbors together. The annual calendar thus features two different kinds of occasions: the fundraising purpose of the breakfast takes center stage in July, while the winter events emphasize getting together. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the specific dates in advance.
