Kay County stands out for its striking architecture, vibrant regional history, and wide-open landscapes along the water. A great place to start is Marland Mansion & Estate in Ponca City: The estate was built between 1925 and 1928 at a cost of $5.5 million and combines an impressive building with other cultural sites and trails.

Discover architecture and history

Marland Mansion covers 43,561 square feet across four levels. The grounds also include the Bryant Baker Gallery & Artist Studio. The Marland Estate Trail offers a dedicated way to explore the area on foot: It is 0.711 miles long and runs from the estate’s west gate past the Unity Gym parking lot and Redbud Park to Hartford Avenue.

Another architectural highlight is Marland’s Grand Home in Ponca City. The restored house, built in the Renaissance Revival style, was completed in 1916. Together, the two Marland buildings tell the story of different construction periods: The Grand Home dates to 1916, while the Mansion was built nearly a decade later.

The Pioneer Woman Museum preserves women’s history and documents their influence on the development of Oklahoma and the United States. The 30-foot-tall Pioneer Woman Statue, a work by Bryant Baker, was unveiled in 1930. The museum hosts events and educational courses through its education center; check the current schedule before visiting.

Other cultural offerings range from energy history to the performing arts. The Conoco Museum’s exhibits trace the company’s development from a kerosene distributor to a major energy company. Advance reservations are required for tours; confirm tour arrangements before your visit. The Poncan Theatre was designed by the Boller Brothers as an atmospheric theater. A guided tour also gives you the chance to see the rare works of art in the lobby.

At Standing Bear Park, trails pass six tribal contemplation gardens, a small museum, and a 22-foot-tall bronze statue of Chief Standing Bear. In Blackwell, the Top of Oklahoma Historical Society Museum is housed in the 1912 Electric Park Pavilion. Its collection ranges from items related to the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893 to the present day.

Tonkawa offers further insights into a range of subjects: The McCarter Museum of Tonkawa History displays items relating to Indigenous history, the Three Sands Oil Fields, a World War II prisoner-of-war camp, Northern Oklahoma College, and the pioneers. The Tonkawa Tribal Museum focuses on the history of the Tonkawa Tribe through artifacts and photographs. The Heart in the Park Labyrinth is also worth a closer look: It is 45 feet in diameter and surrounded by 100 engraved stones featuring a historical timeline. The Newkirk Heritage Center is located in a renovated historic building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Group offerings include walks through the National Register district, storytelling events, and tea events; check dates in advance.

Kaw Lake covers 17,000 acres of water and has 168 miles of shoreline. Boating is available on the lake; Sandy Beach is a designated swimming area at the east end of Kaw Dam. The Eagle View Hiking Trail runs approximately 12 miles between Osage Cove and Burbank Landing. Seasonal closures may apply. In winter, one of Oklahoma’s largest bald eagle populations traditionally winters at Kaw Lake. The lake is also part of the northwest Oklahoma Fishing Trail loop.

The Cann Botanical Gardens offer a different perspective on the landscape: A path winds through color-coordinated flower beds, past a wisteria arbor and a lily pond. The Annual Herb Festival is held there on the first Saturday in June each year. Event details may change, so check the current date before traveling.

Recreation and local events are also part of the offering.
