Bryan County is part of Choctaw Country, a tourism region encompassing ten counties. Travel experiences range from historic sites and routes to museums, art, and outdoor activities. Durant offers several cultural attractions, while sites throughout the county tell stories of different chapters in the region’s history. To plan your trip, start by choosing the themes you want to shape your visit.

History Between Academies and Routes

Fort Washita was established in 1842 in what is now Bryan County. It has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1966 (NR 66000626). The fort includes restored buildings that are featured on guided tours. The site thus connects early regional history with a walk through preserved structures.

Two academies reflect distinct founding stories. Bloomfield Academy was established in 1853 as a boarding school for Chickasaw girls. Chahte Tamaha was the site of Armstrong Academy, founded in 1845 by the Choctaw Nation. The two dates make the time span between the institutions tangible, while preserving each one’s stated connection to Chickasaw or Choctaw history.

The history of transportation is also present at several sites. Colbert's Ferry on the Red River was used by the Butterfield Overland Mail Route and served as a station on the route from 1857 to 1861. Wagons, passengers, and livestock crossed the river by ferry. Fisher's Station was also a Butterfield Overland Mail Route station and was located in Bryan County. Fort McCulloch adds to these historical themes: the significant Confederate fort in Indian Territory was built in 1862.

Museums and Culture in Durant

The Choctaw Cultural Center in Durant combines a Living Village with more than 100,000 square feet of exhibition space. The Three Valley Museum explores the history of Durant and Bryan County, with exhibits featuring artifacts, transportation themes, and a Native American gallery. A small-town exhibit with more than 20 shops and scenes from the early 20th century gives this historical focus its own distinctive form.

Other cultural attractions showcase different sides of the area. The Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival is a theater company on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant and stages several theatrical productions. Magnolia Mile Art Alley in downtown Durant features local and regional artists. The World's Largest Peanut monument honors Bryan County’s peanut growers and processors.

Recreation and dining are also part of the Durant experience. Choctaw Casino Resort – Durant offers gaming, live entertainment, and Native American dance performances. Its offerings include twelve dining venues. AQUA at the resort features two swimming pools and two water slides. These cultural and recreational attractions differ not only in subject but also in their specific offerings.

Trails, Nature, and Getting Around

Durant has two walking routes with clearly specified lengths. The Three Valley Loop covers 0.5 miles through the historic downtown. The Crooked Smile Walking Trail and Cross Country Course offers riverside route options of 0.23, 0.36, and 1.29 miles. These figures make it possible to compare route lengths; they describe different route options, not one continuous trail.

Bryan County’s tourism offerings also include hunting, fishing, and camping. Seasonal agritourism destinations are part of the offerings as well. Other tourism anchors include shopping and boutiques along Main Street, as well as the Choctaw Welcome Center. These themes broaden the range of options beyond museums and historic sites without requiring every visitor to follow the same itinerary.

Check a hotel’s location based on your own travel plans. That way, your search starts with the focus of your stay, rather than with an accommodation category that may not suit your plans.
