Upper Sandusky: River, Parks, and Film History
Accommodation in Upper Sandusky
Upper Sandusky brings together river and park experiences with distinctive architecture and film history. Each place has a different focus: access to the water, trails, and park amenities sit alongside a courthouse with historic and cinematic ties.
River and Reservoir
Water Works Park is a recreational access point on the Sandusky River in Upper Sandusky. The river is therefore an integral part of the park’s recreational appeal. Check local conditions before visiting. Another body of water is Upper Sandusky Reservoir #1 in Upper Sandusky Reservoir Park. The reservoir covers 32 acres; the park has a boat ramp and access for small boats. If you plan to go boating, please check conditions beforehand. Another activity there is an 18-hole disc golf course. The course adds a land-based activity to the water access, giving Reservoir Park two clearly distinct features.
Parks and Trail Connections
The Tarhe Trail connects Harrison Smith Park with Upper Sandusky Reservoir Park and crosses the Sandusky River along the way. The route therefore runs between two park destinations and also includes a river crossing. Harrison Smith Park in Upper Sandusky has a swimming pool and a fishing pond. The facilities appeal to different interests: swimming in the pool or fishing at the pond. Stepping Stones Park focuses on trails: it has a walking path, and a bike and walking trail leads to River's Edge. Unlike the Tarhe Trail, which connects two parks and crosses the river, this route leads specifically to River's Edge.
Courthouse and Film History
The Wyandot County Courthouse is located in downtown Upper Sandusky. Its interior features include murals and a three-flight marble staircase. The staircase divides the ascent into three flights; together with the murals, it offers architecture enthusiasts specific details to look for in the building. The courthouse also has a film connection: the courtroom on the third floor was used in “The Shawshank Redemption.” The film connection concerns this courtroom, while the staircase and interior murals draw attention to the architecture of the same courthouse. This makes it possible to distinguish two different interests at one location: the interior design and its connection to film history.
A Nearby Destination
Northwest of Upper Sandusky, nearby on the scenic Sandusky River, is the Wyandot Indian Mill. It is the first educational mill museum in the United States housed in its original building. Restored artifacts related to the history of milling in the 19th and early 20th centuries are displayed in the miller’s office. While the courthouse connects architecture and film history, the mill focuses on milling and its historical development. This nearby destination adds a distinct regional-history focus to the experiences found in the parks and downtown.
