Van Wert offers several ways to plan your trip: parks with play and sports facilities, a nature preserve, water sports, and cultural and garden experiences. Which activities you plan during your stay also depends on the time of year. Programs at the Children's Garden & Butterfly House take place only in June, July and August.

Parks and Outdoor Activities

Franklin Park brings together several types of recreation. It has two age-appropriate playgrounds, a walking path, a basketball court, pickleball courts and a shelter. There is also a skate park and a splash pad. When planning your visit, you can choose from play, exercise and various sports options rather than treating the park as a destination for just one activity. Check the splash pad's operating dates before your visit.

Hiestand Woods Park offers a different focus: the park includes a nature preserve with trails, shelters and a playground. The trails and shelters add more ways to spend time outdoors in the natural area. If you would rather spend time in a nature-focused setting, this combination offers a different emphasis from the sports and play facilities at Franklin Park.

Fishing and water sports are available at the Van Wert City Reservoirs. For planning purposes, this option is distinct from the park facilities: the focus here is on activities on the water. Local boating rules can change, so check the current requirements before taking part in an activity.

There are also ways to plan a cycling trip in Van Wert County: four bike trails are listed there, and maps are available to download. This information applies to the county, not exclusively to the city of Van Wert. If you plan to use the maps, check in advance that they are still available.

Culture, Garden Experiences and Seasonal Events

Fountain Park is in downtown Van Wert, at the intersection of West Main Street and South Jefferson Street, across from the historic Brumback Library. This gives you a specific landmark for finding your way around downtown. The Main Library of the Brumback Library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The park's location and the library's designation are two different things: one helps you find your way, while the other is part of the library's history.

The Peony Festival in Van Wert began in 1932 and has been held annually since then, with only a few interruptions. It is therefore a recurring tradition on the city's events calendar. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the current event dates before setting your travel dates.

The Children's Garden & Butterfly House offers horticulture and nature programs for children and adults. They take place in June, July and August. This makes the timing of these programs different from that of recurring annual festival traditions. Check the program dates before your trip if you plan to visit the Children's Garden & Butterfly House.
