Dayton: Art, Aviation and Railroad History
Accommodation in Dayton
Dayton brings together art history, the literary legacy of Paul Laurence Dunbar and the story of aviation pioneers the Wrights with a historic narrow-gauge railroad. Nearby, the Moraine Trails offer walking paths and views of the city. These themes give your stay a variety of focuses.
Art and Cultural Heritage
The permanent collection at the Dayton Art Institute spans 5,000 years of art history and includes more than 28,000 objects. About 1,000 rotating works are on display. These figures describe different aspects: the time span places the collection in an art-historical context, the number of objects indicates its size, and the rotating works shape the exhibitions. The institute is located in downtown Dayton.
Aviation History and Paul Laurence Dunbar
The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park was established to honor the life and achievements of poet and writer Paul Laurence Dunbar and aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright. Literary heritage and aviation history thus come together within a shared historical framework.
The Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site is the poet’s home. According to the NPS website, last updated on March 12, 2026, the Paul Laurence Dunbar House is open Friday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tours are offered throughout the day, and admission is free. Check opening hours before your visit.
Narrow-Gauge Railroad and 1850s Dayton
The Carillon Park Railroad is almost one mile long and has a track gauge of three feet. Its locomotive is a replica of a locomotive from 1851. On a narrated ride past the exhibits at Carillon Historical Park, the train carries up to 120 guests. Both the technical specifications and the narrated ride are defining features of this experience.
Carillon Brewing Co. gives visitors a glimpse of Dayton in the 1850s through authentically prepared food and beverages from that era. Here, the historical focus is on food and drink, while the railroad and the Wright-related themes explore other aspects of local history.
Other Places in the Surrounding Region
Several places in the wider Dayton region explore themes related to the Wrights and aviation. A ranger-led tour is offered at the Wright Cycle Company Fourth Shop. Orville and Wilbur Wright built and sold Van Cleve and St. Claire brand bicycles there.
The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center has two exhibition levels and a museum shop. The Aviation Trail, Inc. Parachute Museum features exhibits on the history of the parachute. Together, the three places offer different perspectives: from the Wrights’ bicycles and exhibition spaces to the history of parachutes.
Walking Trails Nearby
The Moraine Trails offer walking paths and a bird’s-eye view of Carillon Historical Park and the city of Dayton. They complement the themes of museums, notable figures and technology with outdoor trails and views of these two named locations.
