Discover Canfield: Museums, Bikeway, and Events
Accommodation in Canfield
When looking for a hotel in Canfield, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Historical collections and memorial sites sit alongside a paved trail and events at two locations. Are you more interested in military history, local history, outdoor recreation, or events? These interests lead to different places and give you specific points of reference for considering Canfield as a destination.
Museums and Historic Sites
The War Vet Museum is located in a building constructed in 1809 that still stands on its original foundation. Its collection includes more than 40,000 artifacts from conflicts ranging from the American Revolution to the modern War on Terror. The basement also features model railroad displays by the Canfield Model Railroaders. This means the same museum brings together a collection spanning a broad period of history and a dedicated model railroad area.
The Canfield Historical Society Museum has a different focus. It houses artifacts, documents, and photographs that tell the story of the Canfield Historical Society’s past, and displays tools and Native American pottery. The War Vet Museum centers on military conflicts across many eras; the Historical Society Museum combines materials about its own past with the exhibits mentioned above.
The Old North Cemetery offers another historical perspective. It contains old stone grave markers for veterans of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and other wars. The grave markers set this site apart from the museum collections: here, remembrance of veterans is connected to a cemetery. At Village Green, the Canfield Historical Society also preserves a landmark in the same condition it was in when Ralph Fowler last closed the door.
MetroParks Bikeway and Outdoor Activities
The MetroParks Bikeway offers a different focus. It runs through Canfield, is 11 miles long, and is paved; the trail is for walkers, skaters, and cyclists. It opened in 2000 after a former railroad line was converted into a bike and walking trail. Thus, the line’s former use as a rail corridor and its later conversion into a bike and walking trail are part of the history of the same route. Its length and the three activities listed give the Bikeway a different profile from the historic sites.
Greasel Park offers residents playground equipment and sports fields.
Events at the Fairgrounds and Village Green
The Canfield Fairgrounds cover 353 acres. The Canfield Fairgrounds host a wide-ranging program of events throughout the year, including car, horse, and dog shows, craft shows, a haunted house, various walks and runs, and recycling drives. The program therefore goes beyond shows to include walks, runs, and recycling drives as well.
The City of Canfield hosts numerous special events at Village Green in spring, summer, and fall. This differs from the year-round program at the Canfield Fairgrounds: the city’s special events at the Green take place during three seasons, while the program at the fairgrounds runs throughout the year. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for your preferred travel period.
