South Point lies at Ohio’s southernmost tip, where the land meets the Ohio River. The river has long been central to South Point’s identity: generations have worked, traveled, and gathered along its banks. This gives your trip two defining perspectives: the river landscape and the town’s history.

Ohio River and riverfront

South Point’s Riverfront Park is a special stop along the river. From there, you can see three states as well as Ohio’s southernmost point. The park thus connects its riverside setting with the town’s geographic distinction. It is also used for fishing and enjoying the river views. If river views or fishing matter when choosing your destination, this is the specific place where both come together.

South Point’s Three State Overlook is also associated with the words “Three States” at river mile 317. The two references emphasize different things: at Riverfront Park, the view of three states is explicitly mentioned, while at the overlook, the words identify the river location. This distinguishes the park’s view from the overlook’s designation.

The “Village of South Point Public Launching Ramp” is associated with South Point; a nautical chart revised in January 2014 lists it under this name. If you plan to use the ramp, check its current condition and access before your visit.

Founding and early local history

South Point was founded in the summer of 1798 by William “Ranger” Davidson. Davidson served in the militia of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in the Continental Line. The monument to the Revolutionary War veteran, known as “Ranger,” stands at the corner of the First Baptist Church property and overlooks the pioneer cemetery, which has since disappeared. Davidson was buried in that cemetery. The founding, monument, and burial are thus connected to the same historical figure.

First Baptist was South Point’s first church; it was founded in 1823. This date adds a distinct milestone in early history to the town’s founding in 1798: 1798 marks the founding of the town, while 1823 marks the founding of its first church. This chronological distinction makes the two historical references easier to place.

Putting South Point in context for your trip

If river views and fishing are what sway you, Riverfront Park offers both in one place. If you are more interested in local history, the founding, monument, and first church point to different historical landmarks. These highlights help you put South Point in context as a destination before comparing hotel offers for your travel dates.
