Discover Bucyrus: Park Trails, Food and Culture
Accommodation in Bucyrus
Bucyrus combines nature, an annual festival and a variety of cultural attractions. When looking for a hotel in Bucyrus, consider what you want to focus on during your trip: trails through prairie and woodland, the Bratwurst Festival, or history, art and theater. The following places and activities give you specific ideas to help plan your trip.
Nature and Trails at Unger Park
Unger Park is located on the edge of Bucyrus. It covers 53 acres of restored prairie and bottomland forest. Its trail system is about three miles long and winds through mature prairies and woodlands, as well as along the edge of the Sandusky River. This gives you an idea of both the approximate trail length and the range of landscapes to consider. If you want to focus on nature and outdoor activity, the park is a specific point of interest to include in your travel plans.
Bratwurst Festival and Ohio Foods
The Bratwurst Festival takes place in Bucyrus every August; the exact festival dates change. It features live music, parades, competitions, pageants, a craft fair and a 5K Color Run. The program may vary from year to year. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the exact dates and program in advance.
The festival features Bucyrus bratwurst, local specialties and dozens of food vendors. The selection of vendors and food changes from year to year. For a different kind of culinary experience, visit The Pickwick Place: the market primarily offers produce and products from Ohio, and its selection changes. Several acres are also planted with fruit, vegetables and flowers for you to pick yourself; seasonal availability varies. The market offerings and pick-your-own options therefore differ both in the types of offerings and in their availability throughout the year.
History, Art and Theater
The Scroggs House Museum presents Bucyrus’s past through notable figures, artifacts, photographs and documents. The Crawford County Courthouse offers another perspective on the city’s history and architecture: architect Harlan F. Jones designed the building, which was constructed in 1856.
The Crawford County Art Center is in downtown Bucyrus at 117 N Sandusky Ave. It serves as a sales and exhibition gallery, classroom and event venue. On Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m., the center offers free art activities through Creation Station. Before visiting, check whether the activities are taking place at those times on the Sunday you plan to go.
Another artistic landmark is the Great American Crossroads mural in Millenium Park, next to Washington Square in downtown Bucyrus. It is 34 feet high and 130 feet wide. Founded in 1951, Bucyrus Little Theatre produces a wide range of high-quality performances. Since schedules change, check the dates for your travel period if you plan to attend a performance.
