In eastern Cavalier County, Frost Fire Park offers a ski area and a live theater production in summer. These different offerings give your trip two clear focal points: skiing and summer theater. The county also offers a diverse landscape, outdoor activities and places with cultural and historical significance.

Landscape and Geological History

Almost all of Cavalier County’s surface is gently rolling to hilly. Beneath the terrain lie sediments deposited when glaciers last advanced into the Rendezvous Region about 12,000 years ago. The Pembina Escarpment marks the eastern edge of the glaciated plain along the county’s eastern boundary.

The Pembina River has eroded through glacial sediments and Cretaceous bedrock, forming Pembina Gorge. It is one of North Dakota’s most scenic areas. The state’s oldest rocks are also exposed in the gorge. Thus, gently rolling terrain and a river-eroded gorge represent different landscape features within the region described.

Nearby, the Cavalier Forest Nature Trail is located in Cavalier City Park. It is used for hiking and biking, as well as birdwatching, wildlife viewing and photography.

Culture, Architecture and History

The Cavalier County Museum in Dresden displays artifacts from a bygone era in the buildings of its museum complex. The collection and the buildings offer two distinct perspectives on the place. Holy Trinity Church was built in 1936 from fieldstones gathered in the surrounding area and has original stained-glass windows.

The Cavalier County Courthouse in Langdon is a one-story building in the Mid-Century Modern style. Foss and Co. designed it, and it was built in 1957. RSL 3 offers a different historical focus: the site includes a field with 16 Sprint missile silos and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Private or guided public tours are available.
