Stokes County: Trails, River and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Stokes County
The Dan River State Trail encompasses a 90-mile stretch of river through Surry, Stokes and Rockingham counties; it was approved as a State Trail in 2021. The Sauratown Trail sets a different standard: it is 25 miles long, connects Hanging Rock State Park with Pilot Mountain State Park, and serves as an equestrian and hiking trail. For trip planning, this offers two distinct options: a stretch of river or an equestrian and hiking trail connecting two State Parks.
Hiking, Views and Seasonal Conditions
At Hanging Rock State Park, trails lead to scenic mountain views, rock outcrops, waterfalls and a mountain cave. A hike can therefore focus on a range of different features: the views, distinctive rock formations, water or the cave landscape. The park also has trails open to horseback riding and mountain biking. The Sauratown Trail, by contrast, is a 25-mile connection between two State Parks. In the broader regional context, the section of the Mountain-to-Sea Trail from Pilot Mountain State Park in Surry County to Hanging Rock State Park in Stokes County also uses State Park trails and the Sauratown Trail.
Keep in mind that the Sauratown Trail closes during deer hunting season from November through January, as well as in wet, muddy conditions. These two restrictions play different roles in choosing when to visit: both the time of year and the condition of the trail matter. Check conditions before your hike if you plan to include the trail in your itinerary.
Hanging Rock State Park offers campsites, a swimming lake and access to paddling on the Dan River. The availability of seasonal recreational activities may vary, so coordinate your plans with your desired travel dates. At its river access point, the Dan River Company offers canoe, kayak and paddleboard rentals, as well as shuttle services. Check the availability of these offerings before your trip.
Mills, Art and History
Jessup's Mill was built in 1910. The almost completely preserved roller mill complex was powered by the Dan River. As the only corn mill in Stokes County, the site is also significant to the region's milling history. Moratock Furnace is now the focal point of Moratock Park. Together, these sites offer different insights into milling and industrial history, though they do not share the same purpose or construction history.
The Danbury Historic District largely preserves the architectural character it had developed by 1930. Danbury is also home to the Arts Place of Stokes at 500 Main St. The arts center includes the Ben & Lemma Apple Gallery, the Retail Market, the Three Sisters Stage, Rocky's Coffee & Ice Cream, a Ceramic Studio/Classroom and Artist Studios. The range spans a gallery and market, a stage and coffee area, as well as ceramic and artist studios.
For more than 50 years, the Stokes Stomp has celebrated the art, music, heritage and community spirit of Stokes County. The festival features live music and dance performances, as well as craft vendors, food trucks, activities for children and demonstrations. The program may vary from one edition to the next. If attending the festival is part of your trip planning, check the details for the specific edition. Unlike the Historic District's preserved architectural character or the history of milling, the festival focuses on living culture and community.
