Cleveland: Trails, Theater, and Local Culture
Accommodation in Cleveland
Cleveland can be explored through a variety of interests: protected river landscapes and trails sit alongside theater, history, and sports. In Cleveland County, the Broad River Greenway encompasses about 1,500 acres of protected land on both sides of the Broad River. This gives the region visitors different ways to plan a trip—from a natural-surface trail along the river to cultural events and local specialties.
River Landscapes and Trails with Distinct Features
At the Broad River Greenway, the 2.2-mile River Trail follows the Broad River on a natural surface. The First Broad River Trail follows the First Broad River for 1.5 miles one way. This distinction matters when comparing the routes: the direction is explicitly stated for the First Broad River Trail, while the River Trail is described by its length.
At the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail, the paths are ten feet wide and suitable for pedestrians and bicycles. They are open year-round from sunrise to sunset. One trail runs 4.5 miles to Galilee Church Road. The Cardio Hill Trail, by contrast, is a 0.8-mile out-and-back loop. The gravel trail is rated moderate to challenging and offers a viewpoint overlooking the city of Kings Mountain and the surrounding areas. The trails therefore differ not only in their stated distances, but also in difficulty and in their described destinations.
The Broad River Paddle Trail is also connected to the greenway: its final section flows directly into the Broad River Greenway. This river landscape offers both riverside trails and a paddling route with a stated connection to the greenway.
Theater, Sports, and History
The Kings Mountain Little Theatre produces the outdoor drama “Liberty Mountain” each year. This immersive theater experience tells the story of the Battle of Kings Mountain and includes dynamic reenactments of battle scenes. Every August, Shelby also hosts the American Legion World Series, a six-day youth baseball championship competition at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium. Theater and sports thus bring different highlights to the events calendar.
The Kings Mountain Historical Museum features rotating exhibits. Two historic houses behind the post office are also often opened during special events. The African American Heritage Trail covers schools, churches, and community centers connected to the region’s African American heritage; most of these sites are on private property. Performances, gatherings, and events are held in the Great Hall. An interactive Common Threads panel lets visitors explore musical styles and milestones.
Local Food and Recreation
In Shelby, liver mush is considered a locally made and popular dish. Cleveland County is especially associated with barbecue, including pork barbecue. These are two distinct culinary connections: Shelby’s local association with liver mush and the county’s barbecue tradition.
Recreational options also include the Foothills Public Shooting Complex, which is open to the public for recreational use. Its rifle range is 250 yards long, with firing positions at 100, 150, 200, and 250 yards. This specific facility sets it apart from the river trails, viewpoints, and cultural events that also shape Cleveland.
