Discover the Town’s History on Foot
Rutherfordton Town Hall is a partner and stop on the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. You can also get a trail passport stamp there. Those interested in the town’s history will also find several different ways to explore on foot.
The Rutherfordton Historic Main Street TRACK Trail is half a mile long and passes historic landmarks and features dating to the American Revolutionary War. The Rutherfordton Main Street Safari invites you to walk along Main Street and discover historic features of the town. For a longer route, try the Gold Mile: This one-mile loop runs through downtown and to the Bechtler House. The trails differ both in length and in the historical topics they explore.
Gold History and Unique Details
The Bechtler House was the home of Christopher Bechtler, who minted the first one-dollar gold coin. Artifacts and exhibits in the house tell the story of the Bechtler family and take you back to the 1830s. The gold history is brought to life in a specific place, with exhibits that focus on that era.
Bechtler Mint Historic Park also explores this history: the Hidden Floor of Gold is a reconstruction of a floor developed by Christopher Bechtler. It was designed to catch gold dust stuck to miners’ shoes. At the Bechtler Mint Site, a tunnel runs for more than 80 feet before turning north for another 30 feet. Check access conditions before visiting. Downtown, St. Francis Episcopal Church also has a collection of Tiffany stained-glass windows.
The Cherry Bounce Trail offers another link to the past. It originally served as a distribution route along which moonshiners delivered Amos Owens’ cherry bounce drink, made with cherries from Golden Valley. The trail tells a different story from the gold coins and the Bechtler House: here, the focus is on a drink, its ingredients and its former distribution route.
Nature, Play and Creative Activities
The Purple Martin Greenway offers a chance to explore wildlife, streams, waterfalls and local plant life. The trail is also suitable for bikes, children and pets.
