Rutherford County Between Rocks, Trails and History
Accommodation in Rutherford County
Rutherford County offers striking rock formations, trails through natural areas and insights into the region’s history. At Chimney Rock, hiking and scenic overlooks take center stage; elsewhere, trails run along lakes or through several communities. Museums and historic sites complement outdoor experiences with topics such as the North Carolina Gold Rush and the county’s agricultural heritage.
Rock Formations and Hiking Trails at Chimney Rock
Chimney Rock State Park is located in Rutherford County and offers views of Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. The park’s namesake attraction, Chimney Rock, is a freestanding rock spire that rises 315 feet. The park has ten hiking trails of varying difficulty. The Outcroppings Trail passes through a field of boulders via a series of stairways and overlooks, climbing almost vertically to the summit of Chimney Rock.
Another trail at Hickory Nut Gorge climbs gently to the base of a 404-foot waterfall and offers views of the cliffs above. The two routes have distinct features: the Outcroppings Trail leads over stairways and through a field of boulders to the summit, while the other trail leads to the base of the waterfall. This makes it easy to distinguish the routes by their described scenery and paths.
The main entrance to the attraction at Chimney Rock State Park is open seven days a week; timed-entry reservations are required. Check the latest operating information before you travel. Highway 64/74A from Rutherfordton is listed as an open access route into the Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village area. It’s also a good idea to check the route’s current status before setting out.
Trails Between Parks and Communities
The Weed Patch Mountain Trail connects Eagle Rock in Chimney Rock State Park with Buffalo Creek Park near Rumbling Bald Resort. Buffalo Creek Park has a 3.5-mile trail for hikers and cyclists, with views of Lake Lure, Bald Mountain Lake and Young’s Mountain along the way. Trail access conditions may change, so check them before setting out.
The Rumbling Bald Trail is a loop on the south side of Rumbling Bald Mountain. It winds through hardwood forest, past large boulder fields and through areas at the base of rock cliffs. Access to Rumbling Bald is free; check the current access status before visiting.
Other trails differ considerably in length and route. The Thermal Belt Rail Trail runs 13.5 miles from Gilkey to Forrest Hunt Elementary and passes through five communities, including Ruth, Spindale, Rutherfordton and Forest City. By contrast, the Purple Martin Greenway is two miles long, ten feet wide and paved; it connects Kiwanis Park with Crestview Park. These details help you compare the two routes by length and the places they connect.
