Discover Randolph County
Accommodation in Randolph County
The county’s places and facilities differ considerably in their focus and provide a factual basis for tailoring your plans to these interests.
Wildlife and trails at the North Carolina Zoo
The North Carolina State Zoological Park in Randolph County has 500 acres of exhibit space. The zoo also includes the Purgatory Mountain Trails: a network of four trails totaling just under five miles. The acreage refers to the exhibit space, while the mileage describes the total length of the trail network. When including wildlife and trails in your trip plans, you can consider these two different measurements separately rather than treating them as measures of the same offering.
Seagrove and its pottery culture
Seagrove is known for hand-thrown pottery: the area’s pottery studios are internationally renowned for exceptional work. More than 100 local artisans work in pottery in Seagrove. In addition, there are more than 90 pottery studios and ceramic studios in Seagrove and the neighboring hamlets. These figures describe different aspects of pottery culture—the number of artisans on the one hand, and the studios and potteries on the other.
Another place to explore the subject is the North Carolina Pottery Center. It is the only statewide institution in the United States devoted exclusively to pottery, and it features a permanent historical exhibit on North Carolina’s pottery history. Thus, Seagrove highlights the work of artisans and local businesses, while the Center focuses on the history of pottery in the state.
Landscape and nature preserves
Uwharrie National Forest is located in Randolph County. In the Uwharrie Mountains, Ridges Mountain Nature Preserve protects 423 acres. Ward Nature Preserve encompasses 323 acres of wooded land at the headwaters of Bachelor Creek. The two preserves can be distinguished by their respective characteristics: Ridges Mountain Preserve is identified by its location in the Uwharrie Mountains, while Ward Preserve is described by its wooded acreage and connection to the creek’s headwaters.
Bodies of water and open spaces are also among the county’s varied landscape features. Ramseur Lake is a 127-acre lake with a 9-acre park between Ramseur and Franklinville. Boating and fishing are available at the lake; there are also picnic shelters and a playground. The lake and park have their own acreage figures. For trip planning, it is also helpful to distinguish the listed water activities from the park facilities.
Bridge, sculptures, and park amenities
Pisgah Covered Bridge was built in 1911 and crosses the West Fork Branch of the Little River. The bridge has a relatively flat, 0.25-mile loop trail, as well as a small picnic and parking area. The date refers to the bridge’s construction; the trail length and the areas mentioned refer to the facilities on site. This makes it possible to distinguish the historic bridge from today’s visitor amenities without assuming an additional walking time for either.
At Carolina Bronze Sculpture Garden, a walking path circles a pond, with benches and a picnic area along the path. The collection includes more than 27 sculptures by a range of emerging and established artists, using three-dimensional media suitable for outdoor display. The walking path and the collection offer two different perspectives on the garden: its layout and the works on display.
The orienteering course at Creekside Park is 1.24 miles long and has 12 control points.
Pottery connections and regional visitor information
Pottery is also a theme outside Seagrove: the I-73/74 Visitor Centers display more than 60 pieces featuring work by potteries from the Seagrove area. The centers are managed and operated by the Randolph County Tourism Development Authority in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Another regional connection to food production is Goat Lady Dairy. The dairy opened in 1995 among the rolling hills in northeastern Randolph County, in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The facilities described include a dairy barn with a milking parlor, a goat barn, a dining room, and an approved cheese-making room.
The selection ranges from pottery history and artisan work to landscapes and wildlife, as well as trails, lakes, and park amenities.
