Greene County: History, Places, and Things to Do
Accommodation in Greene County
In the Snow Hill Historic District, you’ll find examples of a wide range of architectural styles: Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Period Cottage, Tudor Revival, Minimal Traditional, and Ranch. This variety makes the District a distinctive starting point for exploring Snow Hill’s architectural history. A walking tour of the Snow Hill Historic District is also one of the activities available in Snow Hill.
History and Character
West Harper Street is also part of the District’s character: it’s a quiet residential street with mature trees and well-kept homes and properties. This offers a different perspective on the area than a focus on individual architectural styles—it highlights the feel of a residential street. The name Snow Hill itself refers to the historic white sandy banks of nearby Contentnea Creek.
The Greene County Museum also adds a cultural touch. It offers a variety of programs and exhibits throughout the year, free and open to the public. The annual Gospel Fest features gospel artists from Greene County. The cultural offerings therefore range from exhibits and programs to musical events.
Another historic point of interest is the Nooherooka Marker. It is located on NC 58 at SR 1058, northwest of Snow Hill. The Fort NeyuherĂş:kÄ™ Monument, spelled Nooherooka in English, commemorates the last battle of the Tuscarora War in 1713. Nooherooka was the site of a decisive battle from March 20 to 23, 1713, in which 950 people were killed or captured. The Fort Nooherooka Site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
Recreation and Activity
The Greene County Sports Complex brings together several sports and recreation facilities: the grounds include three baseball fields, a football field, a soccer field, a playground, picnic areas, and walking trails. The TRACK Trail also runs through the Complex and is 1.5 miles long. These offerings differ from Snow Hill’s historical attractions and provide a more sports-focused side of the County.
The Greene County Wellness Center has a gymnasium, three batting cages, a stage, a fitness room, two small classrooms, and one large classroom. The fitness rooms are free to use. The center is also intended to host recreational basketball games, travel basketball tournaments, and other activities. Greene County’s recreational sports leagues include Buddy Ball for people with disabilities.
Water Activities in Hookerton
In Hookerton, Contentnea Creek offers opportunities for fishing. There are also two boat ramps for canoeing and kayaking. The NC Wildlife boat ramp on North William Hooker Drive has paved access and parking. A canoe and kayak ramp is located at an adjoining picnic and camping area. This means that Hookerton offers water activities alongside another point of interest in the area’s history.
Hookerton has cemeteries and family burial grounds that are more than 100 years old. Hookerton Recreation Park was established in 1974. Together with the water activities, these features give the area a character where outdoor recreation and older historical traces stand side by side.
When planning your trip, you can choose a focus: in Snow Hill, the Historic District, walking tour, and history of the town’s name take center stage; Hookerton offers the fishing and paddling opportunities mentioned along Contentnea Creek. This lets you explore Greene County based on specific interests without treating its different places and their respective themes as interchangeable.
