When looking for a hotel in Lenoir, you can plan your trip around different interests: public art, regional history or outdoor trails. Sculpture offerings vary by location and format; the trails also differ in length and use. This makes it easy to decide in advance which themes you would like to focus on during your stay.

Sculptures in Public Spaces and Parks

Tucker’s Outdoor Sculpture Gallery brings sculptures to the streets of downtown Lenoir. Twelve planters serve as pedestals. The works may be displayed for up to a year and are offered for sale through the Caldwell Arts Council; individual works change. This distinguishes this public-space gallery from sculpture exhibitions in parks and collections.

The WNC Sculpture Park covers 12 acres of open fields and walking trails. Its outdoor sculpture exhibition changes annually. The T.H. Broyhill Walking Park, also called the “Walking Park,” is larger, at 20 acres, and has different features: it includes a paved loop trail, a lake, a nature preserve and botanical gardens. An outdoor sculpture trail is free and open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset; check these details before your visit.

In Lenoir, the WNC Sculpture Gallery features changing exhibitions of contemporary sculpture alongside a collection of nearly 100 outdoor sculptures. In addition, the Caldwell Arts Council’s permanent sculpture collection comprises more than 80 works on public display. More than half of this collection is outdoors and easily accessible; the holdings may change through additions or relocations. Access to indoor areas may vary.

Events and Regional History

The Caldwell Heritage Museum explores the full history of Caldwell County through nearly two dozen permanent exhibits. The exhibits feature donated artifacts. Topics include music from Caldwell County, early American history, the military, tools, schools and medicine, as well as toys and games, clothing and a reading room. Fort Defiance is a historic home near Lenoir. The house was built in 1792 by a hero of the American Revolutionary War and restored in the style of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Choose Trails by Length and Use

The Lenoir Greenway offers more than 9 miles of trails and paths for running, walking, cycling and mountain biking. The Zacks Fork Bike Trail is a different kind of offering: it comprises nearly 3 miles of off-road trail for mountain biking. These details give you two concrete points of reference for planning—a longer trail network with several listed activities and a shorter off-road trail specifically designated for mountain biking.

The Walking Park can also be explored through its features: in addition to the paved loop trail, the lake, nature preserve and botanical gardens are part of the same grounds. Together with the changing sculpture exhibitions and historical themes, these offer several ways to plan a trip to Lenoir without limiting your stay to a single cultural or recreational activity.
