Discover Otsego: Nature, Baseball and Culture
Accommodation in Otsego
The Texas School House State Forest in New Lisbon, in Otsego County, has a 1.6-mile loop trail for hiking. Glimmerglass State Park overlooks Otsego Lake. Rolling, partly forested terrain, diverse wildlife and viewpoints along forest trails define the park. The self-guided Beaver Pond Nature Trail is also located there. Conditions on this trail can vary; check them before your visit.
Nature and Scenery
The Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad route also offers its own combination of scenery: it crosses the Susquehanna River twice and passes through forests, wetlands and rolling farmland. River crossings and changing terrain provide a different experience from the forest trails and viewpoints at Glimmerglass State Park.
Baseball: Exhibits, History and Field
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum uses more than 40,000 artifacts to tell the story of baseball through its exhibits. The library at the museum’s A. Bartlett Giamatti Research Center contains more than three million documents about baseball history. These figures refer to different collections: artifacts used in exhibits and documents held in the library.
Doubleday Field officially opened on September 6, 1920. The field also hosted the National Baseball Hall of Fame Classic, where former Major League players competed over Memorial Day weekend. If you’re planning a baseball game there, you can rent the field approximately from mid-April through the Columbus Day weekend in October. This is subject to weather and field conditions; confirm availability in advance.
Heritage and Architecture
Hyde Hall was built between 1817 and 1834 by George Clarke and his descendants. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Tours and events are offered to the public; their dates may change. Check the current schedule if you’re planning a visit.
The Glimmerglass Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is an intact cultural landscape whose natural and built features reflect historic land-use patterns. Both the landscape and the features shaped by people are central to the district’s significance.
Opera and Stage
The Alice Busch Opera Theater is located on the north shore of Lake Otsego in Cooperstown and has 918 seats. The Glimmerglass Festival is a professional, nonprofit summer opera company that presents new productions in the Cooperstown area each season. The theater’s seating capacity and the festival’s seasonal schedule offer two practical points of reference if you’re interested in opera; check event dates in advance.
Market and Agriculture
The Cooperstown Farmers’ Market takes place year-round. Its offerings include fresh seasonal produce, pasture-raised meat, bread, farmstead cheese and free-range eggs, as well as honey, maple syrup, spirits, sweet treats, artisan products and prepared foods. Growers, producers and artisans come from within a 50-mile radius of Cooperstown. The selection may vary. There is live music at every market; the specific music program may also change.
Family Farm Day is an annual agritourism event featuring open-house days at farms in Otsego County. Event dates vary by season. If you’d like to plan a visit as part of your trip, check the dates for the relevant period.
