In Dutchess, landscaped gardens, historic sites and trails through diverse landscapes come together. The county is located in the Hudson River Valley and is accessible by car, train, bus and plane. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether gardens, history, hiking or culinary experiences will be your main focus.

Gardens and Places of Remembrance

At Val-Kill, Val-Kill Pond, lawns, gardens and wooded areas are part of the landscape. Val-Kill includes an adjoining factory intended to show how reviving craft traditions could support local economies. Val-Kill is also connected with Eleanor Roosevelt’s development; today, her life and legacy are commemorated there.

Innisfree, a public garden in Millbrook, covers about 200 acres and is located roughly in the center of Dutchess County. The Cup Gardens, Tyrrel Lake and Lake Path shape its design. Programs include virtual lectures, opportunities to see the daffodils in bloom in early spring, concerts, themed tastings and special tours. Offerings vary by season and current schedule. Check the calendar if you plan to attend a specific program.

Historic Homes and Culture

In Poughkeepsie, Locust Grove includes a historic Italianate-style mansion open for tours, as well as five miles of trails. Another historic landmark is Vanderbilt Mansion: it became the property of the National Park Service and opened to the public in 1940.

Culinary experiences are also part of what Dutchess has to offer. The Culinary Institute of America offers year-round classes for visitors interested in culinary arts; course offerings and dates may change. The CIA Experience Tours last 90 minutes and combine a guided walking tour with a sensory tasting experience. Reservations are required or recommended, depending on the current program. The Culinary Institute of America also operates restaurants open to the public.

For a specialized activity, the Orvis Wingshooting Schools in Sandanona are available by reservation.

Trails and Landscapes

The Harlem Valley Rail Trail is a scenic paved trail. It passes through farmland, wetlands, wooded slopes, historic settlements and town centers. It runs continuously for 23 miles from Wassaic Station in Amenia to the Copake Falls area of Taconic State Park.

In the Harlem Valley near Dover and Pawling, visitors can explore 16 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Hikes range from gently rolling terrain to rocky scrambles. On weekends, Metro-North’s Harlem Line stops directly at the Appalachian Trail in southeastern Dutchess County. Since schedules can change, check the weekend timetable before traveling.
