Garden City: Museums, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Garden City
Garden City brings together a range of destinations for a stay: a protected green space, a historic building, museums and a university venue for the performing arts. If you’re looking for a hotel in Garden City, the focus of your visit can help you decide where to go. Are you most interested in aviation, fire service history, architecture, performance spaces or nature? Each place has its own distinct focus.
Green Space and Architecture
The Garden City Bird Sanctuary is a nine-acre nature preserve. Its landscape includes wooded areas, paths, open fields, meadows, gardens and a fish pond. The mix of trees, open spaces and water shapes the character of the site. The Sanctuary also manages protected green spaces for environmental stewardship, research, education and community programs. So, alongside the landscape, the work with and for the natural environment is also central here.
The Garden City Society Museum offers a different way to explore history: it is housed in an original Victorian building from 1872, dating to the A. T. Stewart era. The building’s history is therefore a defining feature of the museum. Those interested in historic architecture will find a clear contrast here with the specialized museums that focus on collections or exhibitions.
Performances, Exhibitions and Collections
The Adelphi University Performing Arts Center has five performance spaces: a concert hall, a recital hall, a theater, a dance theater and a black box theater. The center is also home to the departments of theater, music and dance, as well as extensive rehearsal spaces and concert halls. The five spaces differ in name and focus; together, they offer a broad range of venues for the performing arts.
The Long Island Children's Museum offers a different kind of experience, with 14 interactive exhibits, live theater, art studios and daily activities. The exhibitions at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum, meanwhile, trace the development of firefighting equipment, protective clothing and tools. Here, the focus is on how the tools of the job have changed, while the Cradle of Aviation Museum explores aviation and space. It has a theater and a planetarium, as well as eight exhibition galleries with 70 aircraft and spacecraft.
Opening Hours and Getting Around
The Nassau County Firefighters Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is also open on holidays and during school vacations when those fall on a Monday. Check for holiday exceptions before your visit. Season and calendar also matter at the Cathedral of the Incarnation: from September through the end of May, it is generally open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., as well as on Sundays. Check the calendar when planning your visit.
The Cathedral of the Incarnation is just a few short blocks from the Garden City station on the Long Island Rail Road's Hempstead Line. When planning, compare destinations by their focus and take note of the different hours.
