A trip to Lewis can take in a range of interests: regional history, winter sports and outdoor activities. Museums and historic sites tell the story of maple sugar production, the Mennonite community and the county’s history. Outdoors, options range from an easy walk to a waterfall to longer hiking and cycling routes.

Museums, Houses and Regional History

The International Maple Museum Centre presents the history of making maple syrup and maple sugar. The exhibit spans methods used by Indigenous people through to the plastic tubing and stainless-steel evaporators used today. It offers a look at how tapping methods have changed over time.

Constable Hall is a historic limestone house museum in the Federal style. The building was constructed in the early 19th century in the Adirondack-Tug Hill region of Lewis County, New York. The house has a historic garden and grounds that are open to the public. There is also a Sculpture Walk along the paths. Access may vary by season; check access arrangements before your visit.

The Adirondack Mennonite Heritage Farm in Kirschnerville near Croghan was home to three generations of the Moser family. The farm preserves the religious heritage of the Mennonite community and traces its Anabaptist origins back to 1525. The site connects a family story with the history of a faith community.

The Lewis County Historical Society is housed in a historic building dating from 1928. Exhibits include photographs, documents, tools, books, textiles, furnishings and paintings. The diverse items in the collections offer different perspectives on local history, from written and visual records to objects from everyday life.

The Lewis County Fair also has a long history. It is a traditional annual county event focused on agriculture, livestock, information and entertainment. The first fair was held on October 3 and 4, 1821, in the Lowville Academy building in the Village of Lowville. Check current event dates and the program before travelling.

Gorges, Winter Sports and Trails

Whetstone Gulf State Park is set in and around a three-mile-long gorge on the eastern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau. Above the gorge, Whetstone Reservoir is used for canoeing. The gorge and reservoir offer two distinct aspects of the landscape: the striking landform and an opportunity for water-based recreation.

Snow Ridge receives an average of 230 inches of snow per year; actual annual totals may vary. Its offerings include 22 trails served by six lifts, night skiing, glades, a terrain park, tubing and extensive backcountry skiing opportunities. Check which seasonal offerings are operating before you travel.

For a walk, an easy one-mile round-trip trail leads to the ten-foot-high Shingle Mill Falls on Otter Creek. The Inman Gulf trail network near Barnes Corners is 5.25 miles long and runs along the edge of a 300-foot-deep gorge. The Pinkney Bike Trails near Copenhagen are set in a wooded area and suit all ability levels. The 29.4-mile Tug Hill Cycle runs from Osceola to West Leyden and back. Check current trail conditions before hiking or cycling.

The route details help distinguish between different kinds of outings: an easy, short round trip, a longer trail network along a gorge’s edge, or an extended cycling route.

Seasonal Markets and Events

In summer and fall, farmers’ markets in the Adirondack-Tug Hill region offer locally made cheese curds, Croghan Baloney, and Amish and Mennonite baked goods. Market dates may vary. Along with the annual Lewis County Fair, these provide seasonal occasions to consider when planning your trip. For the fair, it is worth checking current dates and the program; for seasonal visits to Constable Hall, check access to the garden and grounds in advance as well.
