Racing history, national heritage, museums, performing arts and protected landscapes give Saratoga its distinctive character. On your trip, you can choose from insights into the history of the sport, historic sites, cultural events and outdoor experiences. Explore these themes individually or combine them to suit your interests.

Racing and Historic Heritage

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame preserves and shares the history of thoroughbred racing in America. Its official Hall of Fame honors outstanding participants in the sport. The historic galleries cover three centuries of racing in America. The Hall of Fame Education Experience offers a different perspective, featuring an immersive signature film and interactive panels for all 487 inductees. Alongside the sport’s development, it also puts the people inducted into the Hall of Fame in the spotlight. Since exhibits may be updated, it’s worth checking the museum’s current information before your visit.

Through exhibitions, events and educational programs, the Saratoga Automobile Museum explores the history, innovation and cultural significance of the automobile in New York State and beyond. It is housed in the fully restored and renovated New York State Bottling Plant, a building completed in 1935. Special tours are available by advance reservation for organized groups of ten or more; availability may change. The museum is fully ADA accessible. There is a wheelchair lift in the entrance hall, and an elevator provides access to the second floor.

The history of the American Revolutionary War is also present at specific sites. Saratoga National Historical Park preserves the site of the British surrender in 1777, following two battles. The National Park Service describes this event as decisive to the outcome of the war. The Wilkinson Trail follows the route soldiers marched to and from the battles in 1777. The Saratoga Monument, a 155-foot stone obelisk, was completed in 1883 and commemorates Burgoyne’s surrender to Gates. When the monument is open, visitors can climb the stairs to the top and enjoy a 360-degree view of the Hudson River Valley. Check current access information if you plan to climb it.

Museums and Performing Arts

The Saratoga Performing Arts Center brings together a range of cultural events. The New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra perform on its stage. It also hosts the Saratoga Jazz Festival and shows by Albany Med Health System. The program varies by season, so checking the schedule is helpful when planning.

The Saratoga Performing Arts Center amphitheater has 5,200 covered seats and a sloping lawn that can accommodate a further 20,000 people. Capacity may vary depending on the event setup. Saratoga Spa State Park offers a different focus: it is a National Historic Landmark with classical architecture and a wide range of cultural, aesthetic and recreational resources. The Peerless Pool Complex has a main pool with a level-entry access point. Since it operates seasonally, check its operating status before your trip. The Creekside Classroom Environmental Education Center is located on the banks of Geyser Creek in Saratoga Spa State Park.

Parks, Water and Seasonal Nature

At Moreau Lake State Park, the lake is set among deciduous forests, stands of pine and rocky ridges. The Nature Center adds engaging nature exhibits to the landscape, including live animals, seasonal exhibits, taxidermy displays and hands-on activities. The Moreau Lake BCA serves as a stopover for Nearctic migratory birds during spring and fall migration, especially forest bird species. These two migration seasons offer a specific seasonal connection for visitors interested in birds and habitats.

Water and regional traditions are also part of the park experience. Moreau Lake State Park in Saratoga County has a boat launch with a paved ramp, one mile south of I-87 Exit 17S. From February to April, the park offers an educational program on maple syrup production; check the program dates before your trip. Big Bend Preserve is an 860-acre protected area on the Hudson River in the Town of Moreau. Lakeshore, river landscape and forest preserve each represent different aspects of nature, rather than the same experience.
