Hamilton County: Hiking Trails, Canoe Routes, and Adirondack Nature
Accommodation in Hamilton County
Hamilton County lies in the heart of Adirondack Park. Public lands make up 95 percent of the county and span more than one million acres of forests, mountains, and lakes. Its scale is reflected in the many different ways to experience nature: on trails, paddling routes, and seasonal routes.
Moose River Plains: Trails and Access
The 79,487-acre Moose River Plains Complex is part of the Adirondack Forest Preserve. About 130 miles of marked and maintained trails run through the complex. With such an extensive trail network, it’s worth choosing a specific focus for your outing. The Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road, also known as Moose River Plains Road, offers a different way to explore the area: this seasonal, 23-mile access road runs from the vicinity of Inlet through the Moose River Plains to the vicinity of Indian Lake. Check seasonal road conditions before driving.
Paddling, Cycling, and Fishing
The 90-mile Adirondack Canoe Route is a section of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail between Old Forge and Saranac Lake. It includes parts of the Moose River Plains Complex and its surrounding area. This brings two different scales together: an extensive network of marked trails and a named canoe route with defined endpoints. The Adirondack Canoe Classic is an annual three-day race along the route, held on the weekend after Labor Day. If you’d like to plan your trip around the race, confirm the date with the organizer.
Cycling is allowed on all roads and trails in the Moose River Plains Complex, except for roads and trails in the Little Moose Mountain Wilderness. The annual Black Fly Challenge cycling race also connects Inlet and Indian Lake: more than half of its 40-mile course follows roads in the complex. Check the event date before your trip, too. Fishing is permitted in all bodies of water in the Moose River Plains Complex, with opportunities for species including trout and bass.
Winter Options and Seasonal Activities
Cross-country skiing is allowed on all hiking trails in the Moose River Plains Complex. Nearly 16 miles of trails are designated exclusively for cross-country skiing. Oak Mountain Ski Center offers a different winter sports focus, with 22 trails, 650 feet of vertical drop, and a 270-degree panoramic view from its 2,400-foot summit. It also has a four-lane snow tubing hill and miles of snowshoe trails.
In warmer months, Oak Mountain Bike Park has nine trails. Since it operates seasonally, check current conditions before your trip. This keeps winter sports and warm-weather offerings clearly distinct, rather than planning the same activity year-round.
Challenges and Wildlife Viewing
For hiking, the Hamilton County Fire Tower Challenge includes seven fire towers. Check the towers’ condition and access conditions before hiking. The Hamilton County Waterfall Challenge features 19 waterfalls of varying difficulty, each assigned a point value from 1 to 4. The different difficulty levels make the distinctions between destinations an important part of planning.
Birding and wildlife viewing also feature specific offerings. The Hamilton County Birding Challenge lists 55 bird species found in the Adirondack region and assigns them point values from 1 to 10. A score of 100 points is required to earn a Hamilton County Wildlife Pin in the Hamilton County Wildlife Challenge. The three-day Adirondack Boreal Birding Festival in Hamilton County includes birding hikes, walks, safaris, excursions, and seminars. Check festival dates and registration requirements in advance.
A wetland beside the access road to Death Brook Falls offers opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife photography.
Culture and Activities at Blue Mountain Lake
The Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake, comprises more than 20 historic and contemporary buildings on 121 acres overlooking Blue Mountain Lake. Visitors can row an authentic guideboat or take a family-friendly hike to Minnow Pond. These outdoor activities may depend on weather and trail conditions. Camp Sagamore is designated a National Historic Landmark.
To plan your trip, start by choosing a focus: a section of the trail network, a paddling route, winter sports, or wildlife viewing. Seasonal road, trail, and event conditions may be a factor, as may your choice of hotel for your stay.
