Jefferson County combines historic sites and museums with nature along Lake Ontario, wildlife, and activities on the water. If you’re looking for a hotel in Jefferson County, you can start planning your stay around the themes that interest you most: history, boats, nature, or local food and drink. The examples below show the variety of these attractions.

Nature and History on Lake Ontario

Robert G. Wehle State Park covers 1,100 acres and more than 17,000 feet of Lake Ontario shoreline. These two figures give an idea of the park’s area and stretch of coastline. This makes the lakeside landscape a distinct focus for your trip, alongside the county’s historic sites and museums.

Historic Sites and Museums

Several aspects of the War of 1812 come together at Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site: the grounds cover 70 acres and were the site of two battles. A National Recreation Trail is also part of the grounds, and guided and self-guided interpretive offerings explore the history in different ways. Tours take visitors through the restored 1850 Navy Yard and the Commandant’s House.

Founded in 1886, the Jefferson County Historical Society shares the county’s history through a museum, archives, and exhibits. Its museum is housed in the 1870s-era Paddock Mansion. The building itself provides a historic setting for learning about the region. In Cape Vincent, the Cape Vincent Historical Museum presents the history of the town in one of its oldest buildings, which once housed soldiers during the War of 1812.

The Tibbetts Point Lighthouse is another site with a long history. It was built in 1827 at the point where Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River meet. The lighthouse is considered the oldest in Jefferson County; it has the only original Fresnel lens on Lake Ontario that is still in working order. Its construction date, location at the meeting point of the waterways, and lens make it a notable destination for anyone interested in lighthouses and maritime history.

Boats, Wildlife, and Whitewater

The Antique Boat Museum is devoted to antique and classic boats and houses more than 300 preserved examples. Activities include rowing a St. Lawrence skiff in French Bay, touring George Boldt’s two-story 1904 houseboat, and taking speedboat rides through the islands. These offer different ways to explore boat history and experience the island landscape.

Zoo New York focuses on New York State ecosystems and brings together conservation, education, scientific research, and recreation. Animals on view include wolverines, black bears, eagles, mountain lions, Canada lynx, and gray wolves. Programs about native species, animal encounters, and guided tours with zookeepers complement the wildlife viewing with educational offerings.

Those interested in whitewater can find a stretch of the Black River with fourteen major rapids sections rated Class II to IV. Adirondack River Outfitters runs whitewater trips on the Black River between Watertown and Dexter. River conditions vary, and trip dates and availability may also change. Check current options before making plans.

Local Food and Drink

Saint Lawrence Spirits is an agricultural distillery on the St. Lawrence River that produces small-batch spirits. These include vodka, gin, absinthe, moonshine, whiskey, and bourbon. The distillery uses 100 percent New York State grain for its moonshine, whiskey, and bourbon; much of it is grown in Jefferson County. Tastings and craft cocktails are offered in the tasting room in Clayton and at the on-site restaurant, Saint Lawrence Spirits Château.

Local agricultural products are also part of the region’s offerings: in the 1000 Islands region, visitors can buy products such as honey and maple syrup directly from producers. Old MacDonald’s Farm in Sackets Harbor offers opportunities to meet farm animals and learn about dairy farms. Participating farms may change. You can shape your trip around your interests, from historic collections and lighthouse history to local products or animal encounters.
