Dunkirk on Lake Erie: Lighthouse, Harbor and Parks
Accommodation in Dunkirk
The sites focus on different things and give you specific ideas for outings.
Lighthouse and local history
Dunkirk Lighthouse is an active lighthouse and also a museum honoring U.S. veterans. On guided tours, you climb a spiral staircase to the upper observation platform, walk through the restored lighthouse keeper’s house dating from 1800, and visit exhibits about shipping on Lake Erie and U.S. veterans. In this way, the tours connect the structure with maritime history and the subject of veterans. Dunkirk Lighthouse & Veterans Park Museum is also an official site of the “Path Through History” program; visitors will also find park grounds there.
The Dunkirk Historical Museum offers another way to explore local history, providing the public with historical information about the city of Dunkirk. Comparing the two, the lighthouse experience centers on the site itself, with its guided tour and themed exhibits, while the Historical Museum focuses on the city’s history.
Harbor, kayaking and summer events
At Dunkirk Harbor, City Pier Park offers fishing on Lake Erie, a boat launch and picnic facilities. Depending on your interests, you can focus on fishing, launching a boat or taking a picnic break there. The harbor also has an accessible kayak launch. More than 200 bird species have been recorded at the harbor, adding birdlife as another distinct aspect alongside activities on the water.
In summer, City Pier Park hosts “Music on the Pier” and other events. If a specific event is important to your trip, check the dates for your stay before planning around it.
Beach and sports at Wright Park
Wright Park offers something different: on Lake Erie, there is a lifeguard-supervised beach, as well as a splash pad, pickleball courts, picnic facilities, a futsal field, ball fields and a basketball court. Unlike City Pier Park, whose amenities include fishing, a boat launch and picnic facilities, Wright Park combines a beach with several sports options. As you plan, you can weigh whether to focus more on harbor activities or on the beach and sports.
Boardwalk and seasonal opening hours
The Dunkirk Boardwalk Marketplace has seven tourism-oriented shops and food and drink businesses along a 160-foot covered boardwalk. These include shops offering unique gifts and food and drink options; seating is available indoors and outdoors. The shops are open seasonally, and their opening hours vary by business. If you want to visit a particular shop, check its opening hours for your travel dates. The covered boardwalk and seating give the Marketplace a different setting from the harbor and park amenities.
