Cassadaga: Lakes, Nature and Trails
Accommodation in Cassadaga
Cassadaga is at the southern end of Lower Cassadaga Lake, and New York State Route 60 runs through the community. If you are considering Cassadaga as a place to stay overnight, you can choose from several outdoor activity options: trails for walking and jogging, nature park trails, protected shorelines and paddling opportunities. Cassadaga also has a public beach and a park. This means you can plan with lakes and nature in mind, as well as outdoor activities and local history.
Lakes and Natural Areas
Cassadaga Lakes Nature Park protects 1,100 feet of Cassadaga Lakes shoreline; Fern Island Preserve protects about 2,270 feet of naturally vegetated shoreline. There are two specific places to go birdwatching: it is one of the activities available on the trails at Nature Park, and Cassadaga Lakes Nature Preserve is listed as a destination in the Chautauqua section of the New York State Birding Trail. Check current site conditions and access information before visiting.
Trails and Seasonal Activities
The 77-acre Cassadaga Lakes Nature Park has two moderately developed trails for hiking, biking and birdwatching; in winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are also options. Trail conditions and seasonal access can change, so check conditions before your activity. A roughly 3-mile trail for walking and jogging runs around Lower Cassadaga Lake and Middle Cassadaga Lake. Your options therefore include a loop around two lakes of approximate length and park trails offering several activities.
Paddling and Water Access
Fern Island Preserve is accessible only by water. Many visitors paddle to the shoreline to watch birds or fish; take this water access into account when planning. At the northern end of Middle Cassadaga Lake, there is a free public boat launch maintained by the DEC. Conditions at the launch can change, so check them before your trip. Paddlers can also head north from Cassadaga, under the bridge, to Upper Cassadaga Lake. For orientation, note the distinction: the boat launch is on Middle Cassadaga Lake, while the paddling route under the bridge leads to Upper Cassadaga Lake.
Historic Walking Tour
Cassadaga has a historic walking tour. Citizens for Better Cassadaga created a brochure for it, available at Village Hall on Mill Street. Check availability before your visit if you plan to take the tour. This gives local history its own focus alongside trails, natural areas and waterfront activities.
